Passenger vessel; Canoe; Tepuke outrigger dugout canoe

Scale: About 1:12. A full hull model of a Tepuke outrigger dugout (circa 1960) from the Reef Islands, Solomon Islands group, made from a variety of organic materials and partly painted. The hull is cigar-shaped with a pointed bow and painted white overall. A white-painted structure amidships supports two woven platforms on the port and starboard sides. The port side platform is a roughly square open deck, the starboard side platform is partly sheltered by a hood-shaped canopy. Extending from the sheltered platform is a large wooden outrigger. Rigged to the port side platform is a mast inclined astern at an acute angle to which is set a single rigid woven matting sail in the roughly shape of a crescent moon, known as crab claw. Other fittings include a decorative tassel hanging from the sail and a steering paddle.
