Greenwich Hospital uniform: pattern 1860

Greenwich pensioners hat of black felt.

It is a round hat with a shallow crown and upturned brim. The edge of the brim is bound with black grosgrain ribbon. There is a wide black silk ribbon around the crown which is secured with a geometric pattern in running stitch. There is a bow on one side which is secured with a self-covered button. The interior of the hat is lined with blue silk which is gilt stamped with the following: a crown above a garter with the inscription 'BEST QUALITY LONDON'. The garter encircles a dolphin and trident. Below the garter is the phrase Trade Mark and a number of medals and the dates 1872, 1876, 1896 representing Industrial Exhibitions.

The Royal Hospital for Seamen was founded by William III and Queen Mary II in 1694. Pensioners were admitted from 1705 and originally wore a uniform of dark grey with a blue lining and brass buttons. The colour of the uniform was then changed to brown and then finally blue.
