Sword

Oval side ring hilted sword. Owned by Captain Alexander Hood (1758-98). The hilt consists of a gilt, olive-shaped pommel with ribs and grooves, prominent tang button. The knuckle bow guard has a groove at each edge joined by one bar to an oval side ring, the ricasso having ribs and grooves as the pommel. The grip is bound with fine silver wire, overlaid with a thicker plaited wire. Above the ricasso there is a kind of oval cup which fits over the top of the top locket. The blade is straight with a broad groove running its entire length and a double-edged spear point for the last 152mm. On the obverse the blade has been over cleaned but traces of the Royal arms remain and on the reverse no traces of engravings remain. The scabbard is black leather with two gilt lockets and chape, a ring to each locket and tang button to the upper one.

This sword was owned by Alexander Hood who was born 23 April 1758; entered the Royal Navy 1767; became a Lieutenant 18 July 1777; Commander 17 May 1781; Captain 27 July 1781 and was killed in action 21 April 1798 while commanding the Mars in action with L'Hercule. The pattern of this sword is the same as WPN1161.
