Liquid compass and binnacle - submarine

Liquid compass and binnacle in skeleton mounting used in E boats.

Bowl: Diameter 9.0" (23.0 cm). Grey painted metal, filler plug at side, expansion chamber unsighted. Inside of bowl unpainted brown plastic with four black lubber lines carried on four white plastic arms attached to a white plastic disc at base of bowl. Brass verge ring graduated to 360 degrees. Domed verge glass has a heavy brass spigot at centre below which is a lamp. Fitted with a brass strap across diameter of glass with two triangular shades.

Card: Diameter 6.0" (15.2 cm). White plastic annular ring with black markings, graduated to 360 degrees. Attached by four plastic struts to a black plastic float at centre.

Needle: Two needles enclosed in plastic can be seen mounted below float.

Pivot: Unsighted.

Binnacle: Skeleton mounting consists of a brass rod 22.5" (57.1 cm) long on a frame attached to base of compass. The rod is fitted with a sliding carriage and geared correctors. Binnacle hood is of brown painted alloy with three glazed apertures with covers, one of which has shutters.
