Dirk

Dirk after 1856, which belonged to Captain H.C. Lockyer. The hilt of the dirk consists of a crosspiece with inverted quillons and acorn terminals. On the obverse of the cross is an embossed badge. The badge contains a foul anchor with a crown above, surrounded by a laurel wreath. On the reverse of the cross there is a spring catch operated by a button. The dirk has a lion's-head pommel and back-piece, the mane extending the length of the back-piece. There is a ring in the lion's mouth for a dirk knot. The white fish-skin grip is bound with three wires. The steel blade is flat-backed, with a spear point. The blade has a broad fuller running for some two-thirds of its length. The blade does not appear to be perfectly straight and shows evidence of having been sharpened. The blade is not decorated. The brown (?) leather scabbard has a top locket and chape. There are also two rings for suspension. The mounts are decorated with lines.

The dirk was presented to the National Maritime Museum along with other personal effects, which belonged to Captain H.C. Lockyer including sailor's uniforms that were made for Lockyer when he was a boy; cap tallies; a telescope; a gavel from HMS 'Cordelia'; a model anchor and manuscripts.
