Sword

Solid half-basket hilted sword. Owned by F.W. Hyde, Chief Officer, Coastguard (1858-?). The hilt consists of a solid half-basket guard, with raised bars and crown and anchor badge. The folding flap on the reverse is pierced to connect with the catch on the top locket. The guard is pierced with a slot near the pommel and there are two holes near the top of the grip through which passes the swordknot. The black fish-skin grip is bound with three copper wires. There is a stepped pommel with slightly fluted back-piece, a short upturned quillon with disc terminal and a prominent tang button.

The blade is (Wilkinson) straight, flat-backed with a broad shallow fuller for one-third of its length and a spear point. The scabbard is black leather with two gilt lockets and a chape with pointed shoe. There is ring suspension (a buckle from the sword sling attached to the top ring), the fittings have thread decoration. There is a 1891 pattern sword knot and an imitation black leather carrying case. On the obverse of the blade are floral scrolls with a foul anchor and crown above and a brass proofmark at shoulder. Engraved on the reverse are floral scrolls with the Royal arms.
