Join us for a little swash, buckle and creative fun as Bijou Stories take to the high seas as part of their latest project, which gives a queer twist to tales of piracy and the mythology of the sea.
The Good Pirate is a project by arts organisations Bijou Stories and Avant-Gardening predominantly for older LGBTQ+ members.
Participants have collaborated with creative professionals to develop a variety show, which local LGBTQ+ members will perform onboard Cutty Sark on 23 September. Think storytelling, singing, dance, adapted sea shanties, video inserts and more.
The show takes inspiration from Pirates at the National Maritime Museum and a wealth of pop culture references to create a celebration of queer history. "The show, a re-imagining of a traditional variety show/cabaret, will reinterpret the pirate as an escapee from a homophobic, patriarchal society, travelling on a magical Cutty Sark to meet characters and visit lands both real and imagined," they say.
Making a difference
Bijou Stories and Avant-Gardening outline their hopes for the project:

"The aim of this project is not only to produce a community curated variety show but also to create a supportive space where participants can build friendships and find peer support. We believe that this organic approach to creative activity helps support both mental and physical wellbeing and to this end we are working with a professional evaluator to assess the impact of the project on the participants’ wellbeing.
"We are partnering with Royal Museums Greenwich and Greenwich Theatre as a way of building engagement with local cultural venues. We will be arranging visits to arts, culture and performance spaces and developing exciting new collaborations between the venues and potential new audiences. We will also be highlighting the often unheard voices of this generation of LGBTQ+ people and using their experiences to advocate for better mental health support and to tackle the existing health inequalities experienced by the group."
