Are you interested in arts and heritage? Would you like to be part of a youth-led Diwali celebration with amplifies and engages young voices?
The National Maritime Museum is marking this year’s Festival of Light with a family festival, for all ages, titled Illuminate, on 25 October 2025 to celebrate Diwali.
For the third year running, the festival programme will be curated by Mehala Ford, founder of South Asian arts collective COMMONGROUND&, in collaboration with Royal Museums Greenwich.
This year, we’re looking for 15 young people aged 16-18 who live, work or study in Greenwich to work alongside an artist facilitator to co-produce and deliver a youth-led offer, as part of Diwali celebrations at the museum, during the public festival takeover. Together you’ll develop a trail, tour, performance, workshop, or something else!
You'll work closely with a lead facilitator, meet heritage professionals in curatorial, events and engagement, and collaborate with other trainee producers to design a programme – all the way from initial idea and research to logistics and delivery.
Illuminate is community-led and co-produced programme, spotlighting creatives and entrepreneurs of South Asian heritage. We particularly welcome applications from young people who celebrate Diwali—whether for cultural, religious or community reasons. We value and welcome different lived experiences and perspectives of Diwali, including those rooted in local and global contexts.

What will the Young Producers do?
We’d like you to work with us to source and curate an exciting offer of live music, performance, or interactive resources, which explores diverse local and global perspectives of Diwali and shares young voices.
You’ll attend planning workshops in person, with support from experienced freelance facilitators and Royal Museums Greenwich's youth programme and wider teams.
Working as a group, you’ll manage a £4,000 budget to make it happen, and collaborate on:
- What the final programme looks like - what will your audience be doing and experiencing?
- Who are you making it for?
- How will you engage with and invite local artists, youth and community groups?
Explore the 2023 Youth Collective event, Descending the Runway.
What will you get from this programme?
- Paid work experience (£13.85 per hour, paid monthly for every workshop attended) in a heritage organisation producing an outcome for a public festival attended by 12,000 visitors
- Improved skills in event planning, knowledge and experience of public arts programming
- Meet other young people and build social connections in your local area
- Access to/support from experienced freelance facilitators, museum staff, collections and resources, including behind the scenes access
- Travel expenses (must provide receipt) for any travel outside travel to regular weekly workshops at the maritime museum* e.g. off-site visits for research
- Tickets/entry cost expenses e.g. off-site visits for research or paid RMG exhibitions/shows
- Refreshments
*If transport costs to and from the museum to attend weekly workshops is a barrier stopping you from taking part, please let us know so we can cover up to £10 per return journey (we will ask for receipts).
