Join our volunteer guide looking into Nelson’s first letter written with his left hand, following the loss of his right arm in the Battle of Santa Cruz de Tenerife in 1797. The letter offers a glimpse into Nelson’s state of mind following a humiliating defeat and his injury, telling a story of the naval hero at the trough of his career, yet determined to carry on his duty. We will further explore the theme of disabilities and communication in 18th Century maritime history, and how this still resonates with contemporary times.

Booking essential. Meet at 11am by Nelson's Trafalgar Coat at the Nelson, Navy, Nation gallery.
