Masterclass – nightscape photography

This masterclass introduces landscape astrophotography by linking the traditions of classical landscape painting with modern night-sky imaging. It explores the historical development of both landscape art and astrophotography composition, while focusing on practical approaches to photographing the night sky within a terrestrial landscape. 

Take part, and you will gain an overview of the equipment and methods used for night photography – including cameras, lenses, tripods, and modern mobile phones capable of night-sky capture – providing a foundation for creating compelling nightscape images. 

The masterclass will also include short presentations from members of the Flamsteed Astronomy Society sharing their own experiences and approaches to landscape astrophotography.

Meet the speaker

Alec Knox is a computer animation and graphics professional with more than 30 years' experience working in television and film. Based mainly in Soho, London, he has worked at the forefront of CGI and high-end digital imaging capture for screen productions. His career includes work on more than 15 Hollywood feature films and numerous UK and US television series, earning many industry awards. His credits include the BBC series 'Walking With Dinosaurs'.
