Learning Practitioner - Windrush Schools Development

The National Maritime Museum Learning team and the National Windrush Museum are working in partnership to develop a Windrush-themed onsite schools session for primary school pupils aged 7 to 11 years (Key Stage 2).

We are seeking a learning practitioner to work with the partnership to develop the Windrush Schools session.

The successful candidate will work closely with the National Maritime Museum Schools Learning Producer and the National Windrush Museum to:

  • Design, plan and resource session activities
  • Research and acquire handling collection and resources specifically for use in the session
  • Pilot session activities with KS2 school focus groups and make necessary updates in response to their feedback
  • Evaluate session content against agreed learning outcomes
  • Recruit and train learning facilitators to deliver the session during the academic year 2025/26 and beyond

We are actively recruiting a practitioner for this project with Windrush community lived experience.

This is a discreet project working alongside a Learning Producer.  We anticipate it will take 6-12 days in the timeframe specified in the brief.

Fee: £2,500 (excluding materials and resources)

Artist facilitator (Partner School Project)

The Learning team at the National Maritime Museum is seeking a practitioner to develop an art project as part of our annual Partner School programme. This work will be planned in the Autumn Term (Sept-Dec 2024) and delivered in Spring Term 2025. Our partner schools for 2024/25 are Newhaven specialist school and King’s Oak school.

To best represent the themes of the work and the students taking part in the project, we encourage applicants from historically marginalised and global majority groups to apply for this role. Ideally the practitioner would also have experience working with young people either in Pupil Referral Unit settings or with young people who have Social Emotional and Mental Health needs.

Royal Observatory Greenwich Outreach Project - Cosmic Ambassadors

Calling all Physics and astrophysics students and postgrads!

If you would like to develop your science communication skills and gain experience engaging school groups and families in space science, this is the opportunity for you.

The Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG) is recruiting 10 individuals to support the delivery of an exciting UK Space Agency (UKSA) funded outreach project with local schools and community groups!

As part of the UKSA Space For All initiative, the ROG is developing a pilot programme to extend museum programming out into classrooms and community centres via multiuse toolkits containing space themed learning materials and activities. Our newly recruited “Cosmic Ambassadors” would deliver in-school workshops and community STEM club sessions using the toolkit content.

Successful candidates will receive training from the ROG’s world class Astronomers in how to engage audiences with STEM subjects through astronomy, and be paid £60 per session delivered. An enhanced DBS check will be carried out for all successful candidates.

Essential Criteria:

· A degree in physics or astrophysics

· A passion for astrophysics/astronomy and space science, backed by personal knowledge

· A passion to inspire young people and families

· Live within commuting distance (ideally no more than one hour) to the ROG

· Available for training in October half term

· Available for pre-agreed ad hoc outreach delivery from December 2024 – May 2025

· Experience of public speaking

· Approachable and outgoing

· Responsible, diligent and reliable

The Museum is seeking a skilled creative practitioner to lead the 2024-2025 Saturday Art Club, based at the NMM and utilising RMG's collections. The Tutor will design and deliver creative sessions for young people aged 13-16 years, covering a range of art forms and themes, drawing on the unique collections and providing high quality creative experiences.

Fee: £6,700 (Freelance contract, fee subject to national insurance and tax deductions)

Saturday Art Club Creative Assistant

The Museum is looking to recruit an emerging creative facilitator to support the delivery of the 2024-25 season of the Saturday Art Club, based at the National Maritime Museum. The Creative Assistant will work closely with the Saturday Art Club Tutor to support all aspects of session delivery. This includes session set up and take down, organising materials, and registering and releasing young people each session. The Creative Assistant will work directly with young people, supporting them to take part, and supporting those with learning or access support needs.  

The Creative Assistant will need to be available for all the sessions and for some planning sessions and training outside of the scheduled programme.  

Fee: £3,610 (Freelance contract, fee subject to national insurance and tax deductions)

Creative Practitioner (Families)

Family Engagement programmes are based at the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, Queen’s House and Prince Philip Maritime Collection Centre. 

Family Engagement aims to create a family friendly space that is accessible, welcoming, and that supports all families to make connections and spend time together. Programming is responsive to the needs of families, unique to each site, audience-led, and accessible (culturally, physically, neurodevelopmentally and socially).  

Programming can take the form of: 

  • Large-scale festivals 
  • Drop in workshops 
  • Audience-specific sessions (i.e. under 5s)
