Volunteering at Royal Museums Greenwich is a great way to develop your skills while supporting us and enhancing the experience of our visitors.
Become a valued member of our community by volunteering at one of our award-winning sites. Whether it’s sharing information about our collections with visitors, assisting curators with research, or helping to maintain our community gardens, there’s something for everyone.
Current opportunities
We are looking to involve Family Engagement Volunteers to support the delivery of family engagement activities and workshops at the National Maritime Museum. This includes encouraging families to participate fully in sessions, supporting practitioners with set up and pack down, and delivering object handling experiences in galleries to bring the collection to life.
Application deadline Friday 26 September 2025
FAQs
How often would I have to give my time?
The expected time commitment depends on your volunteering role, and we’ll try to be flexible to suit your schedule wherever possible. Some roles such as Collections and Archive Research Volunteering ask for a minimum of four days per month, which you can agree upon with your coordinator. Others will have set volunteering sessions you can sign up to.
We ask that all volunteers can initially commit to at least 3 months’ regular volunteering. If you need to take a break from volunteering down the line, that’s no problem – we understand that other commitments can take priority, and life can get in the way!
What if there aren’t any volunteering opportunities available at the moment?
Volunteer opportunities come up regularly throughout the year and will be listed on this page when available.
Is there an age restriction for volunteering?
Volunteers are required to be 18 years old and over. Those under 18 are welcome to apply for our work experience opportunities here.
What training and support will I receive?
You’ll receive all the training you need to do your volunteer role. This will vary depending on the role. All volunteers complete an induction session with the Volunteering team before they start their role.
Does Royal Museums Greenwich reimburse expenses?
Yes, you can claim reasonable expenses of up to £15 per day, for travel and refreshments each day you volunteer (conditions apply and please note we are unable to provide parking facilities).
