A child’s caul.
A caul belonged to Thomas’ sister Lorenda who died at two years and one day old. It was believed that a person having a child’s caul was most fortunate in life and that no house- or ship- where it was would ever take fire or the ship sink. Some Captains had apparently been known to advertise them from anything from 5 to 100 pounds.
