Certificates of John Catto and his father-in-law Archibald Inch, and other documents.
Certificates of John Catto include an application to be examined for an Engineers Certificate dated 1891. They range in date from 1889 when Catto was 3rd and 4th Engineer of SS DARIAL to 1903 when he was Chief Engineer of SS BOMBAY, and then a consulting engineer certificate from when he settled in Newcastle upon Tyne after 1915. Archibald Inch's certificates range in date from 1868 when Inch was Boatswain of the barque VICTORY to 1895 when he was Master of SS TIMOR. There is also a possibly complete collection (45 items) of discharge certificates for Archibald Inch dating from 1864 for the JOYGREEN registered at Newcastle, to 1882 for the EDWIN registered at North Shields. Other documents include an essay titled 'Held his peace' (possibly a short piece of crime fiction rather than an historical account) of 5 pages written by Catto about a character called Bob Errington; a certificate of First Holy Communion of Harriet Isabel Inch dated 1896; a hand-drawn map showing two routes from the East Coast of Africa to Calcutta; and a poem titled 'The Catto Anthem'.
