Administrative / biographical background
John Dykes was a master in the Royal Navy. The first two journals in this collection were kept by Dyke during his service on the 24-gun ship WAGER, between 1758-1763. Between 1766-1771 Dyke served on merchant ships (please see LOG/M/92). In 1771 he returned to the navy, commencing his service on the barque ENDEAVOUR on 15 August for a voyage to the Falklands. Between 1776-1778 Dykes served as master of the 6th rate, 20-gun vessel DAPHNE. Between 1787-1789 Dykes was master of the 32-gun frigate WINCHELSEA at the Newfoundland Station, under the command of Edward Pellew.
