Letter from Commander Edward A. Inglefield to Lieutenant Joseph H. Marryat, sent from HMS PHOENIX at Disko Bay, Greenland, dated 12 July 1853. Contains Inglefield’s directions to empty the coals, ballast the vessel, then return home with a party of distressed seamen from the whaler ROSE of Hull. In May 1853 Marryat was second lieutenant under Commander Edward A. Inglefield on the wooden screw sloop HMS PHOENIX (1832), bound for Beechey Island to deliver stores for the Franklin search expedition.
