In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board

Recto: Extract of a letter from Captain James Waller, Storekeeper at Kinsale, describing the circumstances surrounding the sinking of a privately owned passage boat hired by Mr Hutchinson on behalf of Captain Waller to carry gun-carriages and shot out to the PORTLAND, the gun-carriages having been put ashore while the ship was careened. Captain Watkins blames the loss of the boat on the officers of the PORTLAND who, despite having previously complained that the sailing of their ship had been delayed by the want of the gun-carriages, refused to take them on board immediately. After lying alongside the PORTLAND for two hours, the boat filled and sank. Although the gun-carriages were later recovered the boat could not be found and the boat's owners had Mr Hutchinson arrested.

Verso: Report of the examination of Denis Carthy, the boatman engaged by Mr Hutchinson to carry the PORTLAND's gun-carriages out to her, taken before John Luxbery, Soveraign of Kinsale and Justice-of-the-Peace. Carthy claimed that he and his assistant, Auliff Donaghan, repeatedly asked the officers of the PORTLAND to take on board the gun-carriages but they refused. The boat sprang a leak and sank.
