In-letters and orders received by the Navy Board
A report on an inspection made of the ANTELOPE's hull at Mr Snelgrove's yard to ascertain its condition after being sheathed with lead 20 months previously and having completed a voyage to the east Indies.
The principal finding are:
1. the vulnerability of the lead sheathing to damage resulting from boats, anchors and cables; and
2. severe corrosion of iron fittings and fastenings below the waterline.
The author of the report concludes that timber sheathing is more durable and less vulnerable to damage than lead sheathing.
