Correspondence, mainly related to Henry Clifford’s cable-laying career
Correspondence mostly between Henry Clifford and family, friends and colleagues. Many of the letters relate to Clifford’s cable-laying work, including several congratulating him on the success of the 1866 transatlantic cable-laying expedition. Correspondents include: Charles Bright, cable engineer; Robert Gilmour Colquhoun, Consul-General in Egypt 1859-1865; Henry O'Neil, painter on the GREAT EASTERN during July 1865 cable laying voyage; William Thomson, cable engineer who later became Lord Kelvin; James Anderson, captain of the GREAT EASTERN, George Saward, Secretary to the Atlantic Telegraph Co.; John Loft, mayor of Hull; Robert Dudley, artist and Illustrated London News correspondent; Cyrus W. Field, creator of the Atlantic Telegraph Co.; Samuel Canning, chief engineer of the Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Co.; and Admiral Sir John Edmund Commerell, commanding officer of HMS TERRIBLE which took part in the 1866 Atlantic cable-laying expedition.
