Correspondence on POWs, mainly relating to Stalag XB, Sandbostel, 1941-1942
Correspondence of Hill and other senior representatives of British POWs, consisting of typescript letters (originals and contemporary copies), arranged in date order, May 1941 to January 1942 (36 items in total). In addition to Hill, there are letters by Captain Lewis Harold Lewis (master of the STANGATE) and Captain Graham Francis Winstanley Wilson, RN (senior officer at Marlag and Milag Nord combined). The content mainly relates to Merchant Navy personnel at Stalag XB, Sandbostel, and includes correspondence with German commanders, the American Embassy in Berlin, the Red Cross in Geneva, The Merchant Navy Officers Federation, The National Union of Seamen, and the World’s Alliance of Young Men’s Christian Associations in Geneva. There is also a letter from the camp doctor Karl Sperber to the Red Cross in London, and one from Hill to the Brocklebank Line offices in Liverpool enclosing a list of Asian crew members of the MANDASOR. Hill moved from Stalag XB to Milag Nord on 20 March 1942.
