Celebration of the 1st of August 1838 at Dawking Caymanas, near Spanish Town, Jamaica

After the abolition of slavery came into force in the British colonies in 1834, freed slaves were still bound to their former masters under the apprentice system. This scene shows the celebrations in Jamaica for the end of the apprentice system in 1838.

A double-sided sheet, published by R. Cartwright, containing printed details of the celebration on the 1st of August 1838 for the end of the apprentice system. It names the guests and describes the banquet.
