Boteler family papers

Volumes, loose papers and sketches from the naval career of John Harvey Boteler including: verse written while suffering from fever at Port Royal Hospital, Jamaica, 1823; sketches relating to his service on HMS ALBION at the Battle of Navarino, also a log book taken from an Egyptian corvette during the same action, 1827; notes on navigation and stores made while in command of HMS ONYX on voyages to Gibraltar and the West Indies, 1829-1830; oil on canvas painting (badly damaged) of a Royal Navy screw sloop by Seng Yuen, Portrait Painter, Queen's Road, Hong Kong.

Volumes, loose papers and sketches from the naval career of Thomas Boteler including: volume entitled 'Narrative of the Voyage of H.M. Vessels Leven and Barracouta' with related loose ink and watercolour drawings of indigenous people, artifacts and scenes in Tenerife, Delgoa Bay, Madagascar and other places on the coast of Africa, 1822-1823; letterbook kept as Commander in 1826-1829, including his voyage on the survey vessel HMS HECLA.

Also records of the adoption of the destroyer HMS WHIRLWIND by the Rural District Council of New Forest, 1944-1946. Mrs F.W. Boteler, daughter-in-law of John Harvey Boteler, was the Chairman of the Committee of the Lyndhurst Branch of the HMS Whirlwind Comforts Fund.

Oversize folders: Loose charts, drawings, watercolours and prints, circa 1822-1829. Including plans of Sheerness Dockyard and storerooms of HMS NORTHUMBERLAND. Charts of the west coast of Africa surveyed by HMS HECLA and track charts for the voyage of HMS LYRA to Lisbon.

Oversize roll: Chart of the coast of Africa between River Noones and Cape Formosa, as surveyed by Anthony de Mayne on board HMS AMELIA, Captain F.P. Irby, published by the Hydrographic Office, 1812.
