This collection is largely comprised of material relating to the career of Thomas Philip York-Moore in the Royal Naval Air Service and Royal Air Force, and also to his personal interest in aerostats, in particular airships and hot air balloons.

Administrative / biographical background
Thomas Philip York-Moore was born in Jamaica in 1895. He entered service in 1908 and joined the Royal Naval Air Service in 1915 as a Midshipman. He was granted a permanent commission as a Flight Lieutenant in the Royal Air Force in 1919 and would go on to become one of the world's most experienced airship pilots. His career in flying continued after the Second World War. At Cardington in Bedfordshire he was involved in free ballooning and the airship 'Bournemouth', built by a team of enthusiasts led by Lord Ventry and launched in 1951.
