Log of the south whaler L'AIGLE, 1822-1824

Microfilm of Log kept by John Rose on the southern whaler L'AIGLE, master Valentine Starbuck, 1822-1824. Also a log of the ASP, 10 December 1818-19 March 1819. Note that the microfilm quality is variable with some dark/less readable patches.

Historical note:
"John Rose calls his manuscript “remarks.” Charles Payton, the owner of Rose’s manuscript and a relative of John Rose, identifies it as a private journal. Rose seems to have fleshed out
his remarks after he returned to England, and that may account for the fact that his dates sometimes differ from other contemporary journal dates. Nevertheless, all citations to Rose’s journal will carry the journal entry date that Rose uses. Additionally, in order to properly cite the microfilmed manuscript and its repository, all footnotes will use the NMM [[National Maritime Museum] title. The official ship’s log has been lost, and Rose’s journal is the only extant original document detailing the voyage". Source: Corley, J.
