Mathematical instruments

Mathematical instruments (undated) comprising three wooden rules, one of which is inscribed with the name of the Maker: 'Gilbert and Gilkerson Tower Hill'; and one rule of which is thought to be a navigational instrument. The larger of the rules is a sliding rule.

Administrative / biographical background
Gilbert and Gilkerson were a British mathematical instrument maker, Optician - who first traded at 8 Postern Row, Tower Hill, London, England (c.1793-c.1819). The partnership between William Gilbert & James Gilkerson is listed as working between 1793-1819, and was succeeded by Gilkerson & Co. There appears to have been various partnerships involving the two companies until around 1830.
