Francis Arthur Gerard Noel was the son of Admiral of the Fleet Sir Gerard Henry Uctred Noel (1845-1918) and Charlotte Rachel Frederica Cresswell. In civilian life he worked as an engineer for Williams & Robinson Ltd. In September 1914 he trained with the Public School Special Corps at Epsom. Later he served in the Royal Flying Corps at Aldershot, South Farnborough and in France. His service record can be found under the reference AIR 76/357/77 at The National Archives.
