Transcript of the journal of Vice-Admiral John Byng, 1748

Two volumes containing a handwritten transcript of the journal of Vice-Admiral John Byng between 1 March 1748 and 13 October 1748. In this period Byng was commander-in-chief in the Mediterranean, flying his flag on HMS BOYNE (rebuilt 1739), mostly at anchor in Vado Bay, then on passage to Portsmouth.

Williams made this copy from the original manuscript in the possession of Admiral Sir William Graham (1826-1907), who purchased it from a London bookshop. The first volume covers 1 March 1748 to 28 August 1748 and the second 28 August 1748 (continued) to 13 October 1748. Inserted is a letter to Williams from Cyril E. Ashford, headmaster of the Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, discussing proposed courses of lectures, dated 12 December 1907.
