Journal kept by Martin D. Joseph on the educational cruise ship DUNERA, 1963.

Exercise book containing a journal kept by Martin D. Joseph on the British India Steam Navigation Co Ltd ship DUNERA (1937) during an educational cruise from Venice to locations in Greece including Itea, Heraklion and Piraeus, 15 March to 28 March 1963. This pupil aged 14 was from Dorking County Grammar School, but attached to the party from Sondes Place School at Dorking. He won the Captain's Prize for the best kept log book. It includes sketches showing coastal views, small photographs of equipment on the ship and a graph of sextant readings.

Administrative / biographical background
Martin David Joseph was born in Surrey in 1949. He attended Dorking County Grammar School and the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. After serving as an officer in the Royal Navy he worked as a hydrographic surveyor for cable and oil companies. His father Lionel O. Joseph was the teacher who led parties from Sondes Place School on educational cruises in the 1960s.
