Administrative / biographical background
The British India Steam Navigation Co Ltd vessel DUNERA (1937) operated as an educational cruise ship in 1961-1967. Dormitories, classrooms and sports facilities were fitted as part of her conversion from a troopship into a floating school. The cruises enabled children to experience foreign travel, often for the first time, and learn about navigation and the workings of a ship. The two prize-winning journals JOD/269/1 and JOD/269/2 were donated by a teacher who led parties of boys from Sondes Place School (now The Priory School) in Dorking.
