An educational fictional work for children in which a small boy, Athel, tours a gallery of portraits of "The Darlings of the Nations", and the subjects of the paintings speak to him, giving an account of their lives and achievements. Subjects are Horatio Nelson, Napoleon Bonaparte, Pericles, George Washington, The Cid Campeador and Peter the Great.
