A biography of Royal Navy sailor John Hornabrook Smith, who served from 1928 to 1946 as an engine room artificer, chiefly on destroyers on commission to East Asia. The book is based almost entirely on Smith's own service notebook, and includes brief accounts of his service in ships including HMS Devonshire, HMS Greenwich, HMS Kempenfelt, HMS Hermes, and HMS Obdurate, descriptions of daily life in Navy service, extensive notes on ship movements and convoys, details of Smith's record during the Second World War, and further information on certain vessels and events mentioned in the text. Extensively illustrated with black and white photographs, mostly from Smith's own collection.
