Conflicting visions : war and visual culture in Britain and France, c.
1700
-1830 /edited by John Bonehill
"Conflicting Visions: War and Visual Culture in Britain and France, c. 1700-1830 offers the first systematic reappraisal of the cultural representation of war in Britain and France during the 'long' eighteenth century. This radical collection of essays explores the relation of visual imagery and aesthetics to conflict during this important period, drawing upon a wealth of materials including paintings and prints, maps and topographical drawings, commemorative sculpture and historical artefacts. The intriguing case studies reveal that military conflict was not a sphere of social activity separated from artistic culture but rather a determining factor in cultural production, and that war itself was largely comprehended, debated and experienced through those products. Key themes and preoccupations - how differing ideas of the public were predicated by the representation of war; how such notions were shaped by the imperial contexts of war; the relations between conflict, national identity and historical memory - are addressed to show that war served as a primary vehicle for the representation of numerous associated and contested issues, including patriotism and the idea of the nation, loyalty and opposition, heroism and masculinity, sympathy and sensibility."--Provided by the publisher.

The textile history of Whitby
1700
-1914 : A lively coastal town between the North Sea and the North York
"Whitby, situated on the North Sea coast is foremost associated with its rich history during the period 1700 to 1914; the early alum industry, James Cook, whaling fleets, fishing, tourism and Victorian jet manufacturing. The town was relatively isolated by land until the coming of the railway, though accessible both locally and internationally by sea, and its geographical situation had substantial implications for transport both at home and abroad. Its population ensured a constant local need for textiles, in earlier years with the manufacture of sailcloth and sails as well as trade in expensive fabrics with other British ports and foreign destinations. Then in the later part of the research period, many hundreds of textile workers were needed for tailoring, dressmaking, drapery and other closely related activities, including laundry. These developments reflected the increasing demand nationwide from the growing middle classes to own more clothes, while Whitby's steady development as a holiday resort during the Victorian period strongly influenced the local drapery trade. So Whitby came to have special social and historical textile needs of its own, as well as obvious similarities to many other towns of similar size. However, up to now the town's rich and complex textile history has been rather unknown, therefore this monograph's collated in depth studies presents a valuable insight into the detailed account of the various trades through numerous archival and visual sources." -- Provided by the publisher.

At the turn of the centuries : an anniversary portrait of the marines in the Royal Navy of
1700
, 1800
"The year 2000 marks the fourth turn of the century since the creation of a maritime regiment in 1664. The first turn, in 1700, found the maritime regiments in the throes of disbandment following peace-time defence cuts. Shortage of funds and poor accounting prolonged the process and left some officers imprisoned for debt. At the next turn, in 1800, there were some 20,000 marines. With the French and Spanish fleets bottled up in their ports, after being severely mauled at Cape St Vincent and the Nile, the Fleet marines were engaged in raids and land battles from Brittany to Egypt. To John Jervis, Earl St Vincent, their prime value was to ensure loyalty and discipline within his Channel Fleet. The year 1900 found the Royal Navy again in the ascendancy and some 20,000 marines were now essential to the manning of the main armament in the expanding Battle Fleet. In the wars of that year, however, while there was no challenge to British supremacy at sea, the contribution of sailors and marines in the land battles with Boers and 'Boxers' was crucial."--Provided by the publisher.

Support for the fleet : architecture and engineering of the Roya Navy's bases,
1700
-1914 /Jonathan Coad
"This major new book traces for the first time the architectural and engineering works in the Royal Navy's shore bases at home and overseas and the political imperatives and technologies that helped shape them up to the First World War. Based on detailed archival research, it concentrates on the remarkable legacy of surviving structures. The varied requirements of the sailing navy and its steam-driven successor are reflected in successive dockyard remodellings and expansions. The influence of the Royal Engineers is traced from early beginnings in the 1700s to their major role in the dockyard expansions from the late 1830s into the twentieth century. The architectural development of victualling and ordnance yards, naval hospitals, schools and coaling stations are all described, together with their key contributions to Great Britain's long naval supremacy. Copiously illustrated with maps, plans and photographs, this important and lively work will appeal to naval historians, industrial archaeologists and students of British history."--Provided by the publisher.

Port towns and urban cultures : international histories of the waterfront, c.
1700
-2000 /Brad Beaven,
"Despite the port's prominence in maritime history, its cultural significance has long been neglected in favour of its role within economic and imperial networks. Defined by their intersection of maritime and urban space, port towns were sites of complex cultural exchanges. This book, the product of international scholarship, offers innovative and challenging perspectives on the cultural histories of ports, ranging from eighteenth-century Africa to twentieth-century Australasia and Europe. The essays in this important collection explore two key themes; the nature and character of 'sailortown' culture and port-town life, and the representations of port towns that were forged both within and beyond urban-maritime communities. The book's exploration of port town identities and cultures, and its use of a rich array of methodological approaches and cultural artefacts, will make it of great interest to both urban and maritime historians. It also represents a major contribution to the emerging, interdisciplinary field of coastal studies."--Provided by the publisher.

Between worlds : voyagers to Britain,
1700
-1850 /Jocelyn Hackforth-Jones, David Bindman, Romita Ray,
"From the seventeenth century, largely as a result of British colonial expansion, non-European visitors to England caused widespread frissons of excitement, interest and curiosity in social circles across the capital. This book examines the complexities and ambiguities of encounters between these visitors and their British contemporaries over 150 years. These visitors from former British colonies, including North America, the South Pacific, India and Africa; their reasons for coming and their reception in Britain were as diverse as their backgrounds. Their stories, their impressions and the impact they had on British society are examined here for the first time. The book brings to life the fascinating accounts of a small but diverse group of fourteen individuals, including the 'Four Indian Kings' from Canada and Mai from the South Pacific, Raja Rammonhun Roy from India and Sara Baartman 'The Hottentot Venus' from Africa. In addition to its art-historical import, this timely account is of real contemporary cultural resonance."--Provided by the publisher.
