Canaletto and England
This catalogue accompanied the exhibition held at the Birmingham Gas Hall Exhibition Gallery on 14 October 1993, which showed Canaletto's pictures and drawings of 18th-century England, created during his stay in England of nine years from 1746. It includes examples of Canaletto's works alongside the following essays: 'Canaletto and England' by M.J.H. Liversidge; 'Venetian Painters in England in the earlier Eighteenth Century' by Brian Allen; 'Canaletto and the English Print Market' by David Alexander; 'Framing the Modern City: Canaletto's Images of London' by Mark Hallett and 'Canaletto and English Painters' by M.J.H.Liversidge. The first half of the book assesses Canaletto's career in England whilst the second half illustrates his influence on the developing school of English landscape painters such as Scott, Marlow and Sandby as well as major figures of the Romantic movement such as Girtin, Constable and Turner.

Augustus Hervey's journal : the adventures afloat and ashore of a naval casanova
The journal of Augustus Hervey (1724-1779), the 3rd Earl of Bristol covering the life of a naval captain in war and peace during the period from 1746 to 1759. While it offers a valuable insight into the Navy of the time, it also describes Hervey's peacetime activities among the ladies of the Mediterranean cities. The journal was never intended for publication and the candid detail of Hervey's exploits meant that the memoirs were not published for more than 200 years after the events described.

The East India Company at home, 1757-1857 / edited by Margot Finn and Kate Smith.
"The East India Company at Home, 1757-1857 explores how empire in Asia shaped British country houses, their interiors and the lives of their residents. It includes chapters from researchers based in a wide range of settings such as archives and libraries, museums, heritage organisations, the community of family historians and universities. It moves beyond conventional academic narratives and makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around how empire impacted Britain. The volume focuses on the propertied families of the East India Company at the height of Company rule. From the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the outbreak of the Indian Uprising in 1857, objects, people and wealth flowed to Britain from Asia. As men in Company service increasingly shifted their activities from trade to military expansion and political administration, a new population of civil servants, army officers, surveyors and surgeons journeyed to India to make their fortunes. These Company men and their families acquired wealth, tastes and identities in India, which travelled home with them to Britain. Their stories, the biographies of their Indian possessions and the narratives of the stately homes in Britain that came to house them, frame our explorations of imperial culture and its British legacies."--Provided by the publisher.
