Charles Hare's great escape : the story of a Napoleonic prisoner of war /Katherine Gazzard.
"This is the story of a young midshipman in the Royal Navy and his audacious escape from Napoleonic France. Only 13 years old when he was captured by the French, Charles Hare spent six years as a prisoner of war before making his break for freedom disguised in a French customs service uniform. This uniform is now in the collection of Royal Museums Greenwich, along with the autobiographical account of his escape. With detailed photography, this book takes a closer look at the uniform and brings to life the highs and lows of Hare's adventure. His tale is unique and deeply personal, but it also sheds light on wider histories of customs regulation, conflict and captivity."

HMS Pickle : the swiftest ship in Nelson's Trafalgar fleet /Peter Hore ; foreword by Andrew Lambert.
"The smallest ship in Nelson's fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar was the curiously-named HMS Pickle. The ship was a topsail schooner and, though deemed too small to take park in the fighting it distinguished itself as the ship to bring Captain John Lapenotiere with the news of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar and his death. The schooner set off on October 26th and took 9 days to reach Britain after facing a gale off Cape Finisterre. After the Pickle anchored in Flamouth Bay on November 4th Lapenotiere started his journey to London (a trip that usually took a week was covered in 37 hours with 19 horse changes). [Author] Peter Hore describes the ship's beginnings as a civilian vessel called Sting, through conversion with 10 guns and its role with Admiral Cornwall's Inshore Squadron for French reconnaissance in 1803. HMS Pickle was also involved in the rescue for the crew of HMS Magnificent in 1804 and further reconnaissance missions. This full history details other colourful episodes including a single-ship action against the French privateer Favorite in 1807. Pickle was wrecked in July 1808 when she was grounded as she entered Cadiz harbour but without loss of life. The Pickle's journey is commemorated by Royal Navy Warrant Officers on November 5th."--Provided by the publisher.

The discovery of Jeanne Baret : a story of science, the high seas, and the first woman to circumnavigate the globe /Glynis Ridley.
"The year was 1765. King Louis XV had ordered the first French expedition around the world. appointing eminent botanist Philibert Commerson to seek out medicines, spices, and other resources that could give the French an edge in the ever-accelerating race for empire. Desperate not to be left behind, twenty-six-year-old Jeanne Baret - Commerson's peasant-born mistress, and a deeply knowledgeable plantswoman in her own right - disguised herself as a teenage boy and signed on as his assistant. As the ship stopped at strange new lands, the secret lvoers disembarked to collect and classify plants unknown to Western science, including the showy vine bougainvillea. But it wasn't long before the crew members on the cramped ship began to suspect her true identity. With this incredible true tale of intrigue on the high seas, Glynis Ridley offers a forgotten heroine the chance to bloom at long last."--Provided by the publisher.

Science serialized : representation of the sciences in nineteenth-century periodicals /edited by Geoffrey Cantor and Sally Shuttleworth.
"The essays collected in Science serialized examine the variety of ways in which the nineteenth-century periodical press represented science to general and specialised readerships.... Among the subjects discussed are the presentation of botany in women's magazines, the highly public dispute between Charles Darwin and Samuel Butler, the mind-body problem, and energy physics."--Dust-jacket.

Merchants on the Mediterranean : Ottoman-Dutch trade in the eighteenth century /Despina Vlami.
"How easy and uncomplicated was it for an 18th-century, medium-sized, Ottoman trade company to expand its business in the West? Which kind of resources, in terms of knowledge, information, experience, contacts and capital, could guarantee its successful passage from the business environment of a precapitalist oriental market to that of a major commercial and financial centre of western Europe? Following the venture of the Ottoman Greek merchants Bartholo and Raphael Cardamici, who in the 1760s traded goods between Smyrna, Constantinople and Amsterdam, Despina Vlami investigates various aspects of the organisation and strategy necessary for such an important transition. To expand their wholesale trade business to Amsterdam, the Cardamicis chose as their local correspondent an experienced and strong-minded Dutch merchant, Thomas De Vogel. De Vogel's letters addressed to his Ottoman clients reveal the course of their business transactions and the making of their personal relationship. At the same time, they are comprehensive and efficient tutorials on trade business and strategy guiding the Ottoman Greek merchants through the unpredictable and unfamiliar 18th-century international business universe."--Provided by the publisher.

Exploration of the South Seas in the eighteenth century : rediscovered accounts /Sandhya Patel.
"The first volume makes available Samuel Wallis' logs of the Dolphin's voyage 1766-68 in their original form for the first time. Captain Samuel Wallis was the first Englishman to come across the Tuamotus and the Society Isles in the South Pacific, specifically Tahiti. His writings predate the available textual sources by Louis-Antoine de Bougainville, the log of the Spanish voyages and James Cook - whose text Wallis' prefigures. The three logs attest to the very first encounter between Europeans and Tahitians, but until now comparatively little research has been conducted on the more elaborate second volume and none on the first. The Polynesian archipelagos grew into objects of discourse over the years and Wallis' logs may very well be located at the heart of these evocative constructs. The translated accounts of voyages undertaken by foreign vessels abounded in an era when they encouraged not only competitive geopolitical initiatives but also commercial enterprises throughout Europe, resulting in a voluminous textual corpus. However, French merchant-seaman Etienne Marchand's journal of his voyage round the world in 1790-1792, encompassing an important visit to the Marquesas Archipelago during his first crossing of the Pacific, remained unpublished until 2005 and has only now been made available in English. The second volume of this series comprises an annotated translation in English of this document."--Provided by the publisher.

Naval battles of the Napoleonic Wars : Cape St. Vincent, the Nile, Cadiz, Copenhagen, Trafalgar & others /W.H. Fitchett.
"The wars against Napoleonic France and Spain in the early years of the nineteenth century have long fascinated historians and casual readers who are enchanted by the colour and romance of those incredible times. No aspect of the period has generated more interest and enthusiasm than the war at sea-fought between great naval commanders whose names from reverberated through time and who stood upon the decks of equally famous ships of the line in heroic battles. Here are the true life events that so inspired C. S. Forrester-and those who later followed his tradition of naval adventures to appeal to a new and enthusiastic audience. However, nothing in fiction is more remarkable than the actual events related in this book. Here are the true stories of the Victory, the Temeraire, the Orient and many other iconic vessels, and their famous and inspiring feats of naval warfare at Copenhagen, the Nile, Cadiz, Trafalgar and many other battles that helped shape the modern world."--Provided by the publisher.

Coal, steam and ships : engineering, enterprise and empire on the nineteenth-century seas /Crosbie Smith.
"Crosbie Smith explores the trials and tribulations of first-generation Victorian mail steamship lines, their passengers, proprietors and the public. Eyewitness accounts show in rich detail how these enterprises engineered their ships, constructed empire-wide systems of steam navigation and won or lost public confidence in the process. Controlling recalcitrant elements within and around steamship systems, however, presented constant challenges to company managers as they attempted to build trust and confidence. Managers thus wrestled to control shipbuilding and marine engine-making, coal consumption, quality and supply, shipboard discipline, religious readings, relations with the Admiralty and government, anxious proprietors, and the media - especially following a disaster or accident. Emphasizing interconnections between maritime history, the history of engineering and Victorian thought, Smith's innovative history of early ocean steamships reveals the fraught uncertainties of Victorian life on the seas."--Provided by the publisher.

The victory of seapower : winning the Napoleonic War 1806-1814 /Richard Woodman
"The victory at Trafalgar marked the beginning of nine years of expansion and domination by the Royal Navy right across the globe. This book charts the events of those years, including the Battle of San Domingo in 1806, the attack on Copenhagen in 1807 and the capture of the French base on Mauritius in 1810. Also covered is the Navy's crucial support of Wellington's army in the Peninsula War. Thematic sections of the book feature the skills of the seaman and the lives of prisoners of war. The prints and drawings collection of the National Maritime Museum is the source for the 300 contemporary illustrations."--Provided by the publisher.

Springboard to victory : Great Yarmouth and the Royal Navy's dominance in the North Sea and the Baltic during the French Wars 1793-1815 /David Higgins.
"Great Yarmouth is best known for being a seaside resort and for its former status as the country's leading herring fishing port, but what has largely been forgotten is that during the French Revolutionary War (1793-1802) and the two Napoleonic Wars (1803-1815) it was the main support base for naval and military operations in the North Sea and the Baltic. It was not until I researched a book called The Beachmen that I became aware of this dramatic period in the history of the town and the nation and I was surprised to find that nothing substantial had been written on the subject. Of course, a great many books had been produced on the navy's involvement in these wars, but most concentrated on the high drama of the six major fleet actions and the exploits of Horatio Nelson rather than the equally important, but more mundane, means by which the navy's warships were kept at sea."--Provided by the publisher.

The Royal Navy in action : art from Dreadnought to Vengeance /John Fairley.
"At the turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries, with the British Empire encompassing the globe, the Royal Navy indisputably ruled the waves. Times change but the magnificence and drama of warships at sea, whether in peace or war, remain an inspiration to artists. This fine book brings together a collection of superb art works which bear witness to the majesty of these mighty ships in action and, at the same time, are a memorial to the dangers, heroism and victories at sea. The reader is treated to a feast of the finest maritime paintings depicting the Royal Navy's dramatic confrontations of the last 120 years. Masters such as Norman Wilkinson, Richard Eurich and William Wyllie cover the two World Wars. Other works illustrate the crucial role of the Navy in the Falklands War and the latest aircraft carriers are also represented. The author draws on his own naval service experience to describe the background to, and significance of, the ships and conflicts that these paintings so vividly record."--Provided by the publisher.

Bonaparte & brimstone : a life of mixed fortunes in the Royal Navy and merchant service /Simon Francis Brown.
"Napoleon Bonaparte?s defeat in 1815 came at an inconvenient time for John Monk, an ambitious young naval officer. Forced to rethink his plans, John turned to the merchant service, where he encountered storms, shipwreck and even piracy as he traded between Liverpool and the Mediterranean through the 1830s and 1840s. Bonaparte & Brimstone is the fascinating and engaging biography of a little-known Georgian naval lieutenant and mariner from Parkgate on the Wirral and brings him unforgettably to life. Vibrantly written, it is the beguiling story of one man?s hopes and fortunes, and is ultimately an emotional tale of family and belonging, enriched with abundant personal documents, among them the remarkable diary of a stormy voyage to Italy in 1824. John Monk saw ten years? service across the seas of Europe and survived the horrific bloodshed on HMS Impregnable during the Bombardment of Algiers in 1816, but he grew dismayed at his lack of progress and battled the Admiralty just as he had once battled the French. Bonaparte & Brimstone paints a portrait in miniature of British society in the nineteenth century and of the country?s seafarers who attempted to navigate a path through it."--Provided by the publisher.
