Cargoes of despair and hope : Scottish emigration to North America 1603-
1803
A survey of Scottish emigration during the period 1603-1803. The emigration was driven by economic distress, political and religious harrassment. The book covers the early encouragement given to colonists, transportation, agricultural and industrial change as well as the impact of wars during the period including the Seven Years War, American War of Independence and war with France. Where possible, the authors have tried to follow individuals from their homes through their journey to North America and the book includes extracts from documents of the time, maps detailing location and movements of people, and family trees of migrating families from areas such as Glengarry and Glenaladale. Appendices include estimates of emigrant numbers, the percentage of Scots in the white population of the United States in 1790, the homes and destinations of emigrants to North America, and a list of ships known to have carried migrants to North America.

South Sea Argonauts : James Colnett and the enlargement of the Pacific 1772-
1803
/Granville Allen Mawer
"'Who is Colnett?' So asks Jack Aubrey in Patrick O'Brian's Far Side of the World. Who indeed. As an adventurous teenager, James Colnett had sailed with Cook in the Resolution. He later became a pioneer in the Pacific sea otter trade, nearly starting a war with Spain in the process. He attempted to force Japan and Korea to admit British trade, and failing that smuggled pelts into China. He conducted a whaling reconnaissance to the Galapagos Islands and transported convicts to New South Wales. One way or another, James Colnett managed to intersperse fighting his country's enemies in the American and French wars with thirteen years plying the South Seas. Seeing himself as a latter-day Argonaut, he reflected that his working life had been devoted to 'enlarging the bounds of Navigation and Commerce'. The Pacific gave him ample scope."--Provided by the publisher.

the letters of George Price of Southwark alias "George Green" : ordinary seamen in HM sloop Speedy
1803
This book provides a history of the practice of 'pressganging' in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars, based on the account of George Price, a sailor pressed into service in 1803. The book quotes letters sent by Price to his brother while serving in HMS Speedy, and other contemporary accounts including news reports, ships' logs, and court reports, to provide a detailed picture of how pressing was used in the conflict, and the daily lives of affected sailors. Includes black and white illustrations throughout.
