The War of
1812
: conflict for a continent /J. C. A. Stagg.
"A short and easily-readable book that will explain to both Americans and Canadians why the War of 1812 mattered in the histories of their two nations. For those who seek insights into this subject during the bicentennial commemorations of the war, this book is the place to start. Its contents provide far more that merely the military history of the failed American campaigns against Canada between 1812 and 1815. Those events are set in the larger contexts of the development of the North American continent and the crisis of the Napoleonic Wars in Europe. The book is short, up-to-date, and contains a useful guide to other writings about the War of 1812"--

Defending the inland shores : Newfoundland in the War of
1812
/Gordon K. Jones.
"Defending the Inland Shores: Newfoundland in the War of 1812 describes the significant role that the Newfoundland soldiers played in the defence of Canada during the War of 1812. The Royal Newfoundland Regiment was on the front lines throughout the war, fought with honour and great courage, and experienced many casualties during military actions, such as the Battle of the Maumee, the Battle of Fort George, and the Battle of Lake Erie. This book also discusses several legendary military commanders from the War of 1812, including George Prevost, Isaac Brock, Andrew Bulger, and George Macdonell. The author skilfully describes many prominent battles of the war, such as the siege of Fort Detroit, the capture of an American naval schooner on Lake Ontario, a surprise attack on Ogdensburg, and the heroic defence of a British ship on the Niagara River during an American assault. Defending the Inland Shores: Newfoundland in the War of 1812 tells these incredible stories and recalls important events from Canadian military history."--Provided by publisher.

Making Maine : statehood and the War of
1812
/Joshua M. Smith.
"After the Revolutionary War ended, the new American nation grappled with a question about its identity: Were the states sovereign entities or subordinates to a powerful federal government? The War of 1812 brought this vexing issue into sharp relief, as a national government intent on waging an unpopular war confronted a populace in Massachusetts that was vigorously opposed to it. Maine, which at the time was part of Massachusetts, served as the battleground in this political struggle. Joshua M. Smith recounts an innovative history of the war, focusing on how it specifically affected what was then called the District of Maine. Drawing on archival materials from the United States, Britain, and Canada, Smith exposes the bitter experience of Maine's citizens during that conflict as they endured multiple hardships, including starvation, burdensome taxation, smuggling, treason, and enemy occupation. War's inherent miseries, along with a changing relationship between regional and national identities, gave rise to a statehood movement that rejected a Boston-centric worldview in favor of a broadly American identity"--

Privateering : patriots and profits in the War of
1812
/Faye M. Kert.
"During the War of 1812, most clashes on the high seas involved privately owned merchant ships, not official naval vessels. Licensed by their home governments and considered key weapons of maritime warfare, these ships were authorized to attack and seize enemy traders. Once the prizes were legally condemned by a prize court, the privateers could sell off ships and cargo and pocket the proceeds. Because only a handful of ship-to-ship engagements occurred between the Royal Navy and the United States Navy, it was really the privateers who fought-and won-the war at sea. In Privateering, Faye M. Kert introduces readers to U.S. and Atlantic Canadian privateers who sailed those skirmishing ships, describing both the rare captains who made money and the more common ones who lost it. Some privateers survived numerous engagements and returned to their pre-war lives; others perished under violent circumstances. Kert demonstrates how the romantic image of pirates and privateers came to obscure the dangerous and bloody reality of private armed warfare. Building on two decades of research, Privateering places the story of private armed warfare within the overall context of the War of 1812. Kert highlights the economic, strategic, social, and political impact of privateering on both sides and explains why its toll on normal shipping helped convince the British that the war had grown too costly. Fascinating, unfamiliar, and full of surprises, this book will appeal to historians and general readers alike."--Provided by the publisher.
