Two military men : letters of father and son 1794-1816 /edited by E. F. Radford.
The story of a father and son, told in extracts from letters preserved by their family. James Radford (1756-1812) served with the 1st Royal Lancashire Militia while his son John (1787-1816) served with the 1/62 and 2/62 Wiltshire Regiment of Foot. James volunteered in 1794 for the milita which had been formed as a defensive measure against the risks of invasion by France and Irish rebellion. James's son John served in Egypt and during the Peninsular War took part in the defence of Sicily. Having seen action in France and Spain, he returned to Ireland at the end of the war where he died at sea. The extracts primarily cover military matters and movements and provide an insight into their military lives but are also supported by background historical context, timelines and family details.

A letter to the Right Hon. Spencer Percival [sic], Chancellor of the Exchequer &c. &c. on the subject of certain claims upon the government : together with some observations on the motives which appear to have actuated his conduct in resisting them and containing an appeal to the British nation on the most wanton and invidious aspersion made by him in his ministerial capacity of the character of the late, ever to be lamented, Lord Nelson /by Isabella, Countess of Glencairn.
A publicly argued plea to the Prime Minister Spencer Perceval, in which he is accused of having remarked to the author that "I never thought of the late Lord Nelson and his services as the world has; so far otherwise, that I consider his death was the salvation of the country, since, had he lived, he, in one way or other, would have ruined the nation, and emptied the Treasury"--p. 4.
1812. • RARE-PAMPH • 1 copy available.
