"In 1777, the Danish astronomer Thomas Bugge (1740-1815) was appointed professor of mathematics and astronomy at the University of Copenhagen. Anglo-French naval rivalry 1840-1870
"The Crimean War brought the British and French navies, the most technologically advanced in the world, into alliance after many years of common hostility. It was a period of enormous technological innovation and development, witnessing the transition from sail to screw, and the birth of the ironclad. In this extensively reseached and thorough study, C. I. Hamilton traces the technological development of both British and French navies and analyses the political and diplomatic policies which formed the backdrop to the naval history of the period 1840-1870. Dr Hamilton compares the two navies in a variety of important ways: their recruitment and training systems, dockyard facilities, naval administrations, strategy and tactics."--Provided by the publisher.

Revenge in the name of honour : the Royal Navy's quest for vengeance in the single ship actions of the war of 1812 /Nicholas James Kaizer.
"On 19 August 1812, lookouts of the British frigate HMS Guerriere spotted the American frigate, USS Constitution. Captain James Dacres, Guerriere's commander, was eager for a fight and confident of victory. He had the weight of Britain's naval reputation and confidence behind him. Yet when the guns fell silent Guerriere was a shattered hulk and Dacres had struck to Constitution. By the year's end, three British frigates and two sloops had been defeated in single ship actions against American opponents, throwing the British naval sphere into a crisis. These losses could not have been more shocking to the Royal Navy and the British world. In a strange reversal, the outnumbered British Army along the Canadian border had triumphed but the tiny United States Navy had humiliated the world's largest and most prestigious navy. Further dramatic sea battles between the two powers followed into early 1815, and the British tried to reconcile the perceived stain to the Royal Navy's honour. Many within and outside of the Royal Navy called for vindication. The single ship actions of the War of 1812 have frequently been dismissed by historians of the war, or of naval history in general. The fights of late 1813 and 1814 are often omitted from works of history altogether, as many (correctly) argue that they had no strategic impact on the wider course of the war. Yet to contemporaries, naval and civilian alike, these single ship actions could not have been more important. This volume explores the single ship naval actions during the War of 1812: how they were fought, their strategic context, and their impact on the officers and men who fought them, and the wider British psyche. Trafalgar happened only seven years earlier, and the fighting ethos of the Royal Navy was still hardened by Nelsonic naval culture. Whereas contemporary civilians and modern historians understood the losses as the inevitable result of fighting the vastly superior American 'super' frigates, the officers of the navy struggled to accept that they could not cope with the new American warships. The losses precipitated changes to Admiralty policy and drove an urge for vengeance by the officers of the Royal Navy. This volume explores the drama and impact of the British single ship losses and victories to examine Britain's naval experience in the moments that captivated the British and American world in the last Anglo-American War."--Provided by the publisher.

Virginia in the War of 1812 / Christopher M. Bonin.
"Virginia saw significant action during the War of 1812, from the Chesapeake-Leopard Affair to the defense of Norfolk against British invaders. A largely forgotten conflict, the war played an important role in the history of the United States. Drawing on primary and secondary sources, the author provides an in-depth portrait of the "Old Dominion" at war"--

Grace Darling : Victorian heroine /Hugh Cunningham.
Grace Darling (1815-1842) was the daughter of the keeper of Longstone Lighthouse on the Farne Isles. In September 1838 she rowed out with her father to rescue survivors from the shipwrecked steamer Forfarshire. Within days of the rescue she was regarded as a national heroine, a rare accolade for a woman in Victorian times. This book examines her life and the reasons for her fame and celebrity, which have endured into the 21st century. Grace's image was used to sell books, soap and chocolates; the book's illustrations include advertising material, paintings and photographs of commemorative items. The appendix contains poems about her by Wordsworth and Swinburne. There are extensive notes, a bibliography and an index.

Breaking the Chains : the Royal Navy's War against White Slavery /Tom Pocock
"When the Napoleonic wars ended, Britain had already halted the transatlantic trade in African slaves, although slavery itself in the Caribbean had yet to be abolished. But, in the Mediterranean, the enslavement of Europeans by north African states - semi-autonomous regencies of the Ottoman Empire - continued with Algiers as its driving force. This, too, would have to stop and, if necessary, be stopped by force. But, when that seemed to have been achieved without apparent ruptures with the ruling Sultan in Constantinople, a new and unexpected crisis arose. The Greeks, subjects of the Sultan for four centuries, rose against their rulers and many in the west also saw them as Christian slaves, despite their religion being under no threat. [...] The confrontation that followed threatened war, which all except the Greeks and Russians wished to avoid; eventually war, not only between east and west but within Europe itself, seemed possible. The British strained to avoid the conflict, once with unworthy avoidance of their own responsibility; despite this, extreme violence did erupt. This narrative is primarily as seen by those in the executive arm of British foreign policy: the Royal Navy and, whenever possible, it is told in their own words."--Taken from the Introduction.

The Napoleonic Wars in cartoons / Mark Bryant.
"Napoleon Bonaparte, the junior artillery officer of the French Revolution who became emperor and dictator of nearly all of western Europe, was the most caricatured figure of his time, with almost 1000 satirical drawings being produced about his exploits by British artists alone. Long before the advent of illustrated daily or weekly newspapers these hand-coloured prints were a major source of news and opinion and had considerable impact on the public at large. From the battles of the Nile, Copenhagen, Trafalgar, Austerlitz, Jena and Leipzig to the Peninsular War, the invasion of Russia, exile on Elba and his final defeat at Waterloo in 1815, the actions of Napoleon and his opponents were the main focus of graphic satire worldwide for nearly twenty years. The Napoleonic Wars were also the main topic of interest for some of the greatest cartoonists of all time, making this period part of the 'The Golden Age of Caricature' which spanned the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The diminutive emperor was a gift to cartoonists and James Gillray's transformation of him into the Lilliputian character 'Little Boney' was immensely popular. He also appeared as various kinds of grotesque creature - from ape, serpent and dragon to earwig, toadstool and crocodile - forever battling the mighty John Bull, Britannia and the British Bulldog as well as the Russian bear and the Austrian and Prussian eagles. The Allied monarchs and military commanders themselves were also custom-made for caricature. The Duke of Wellington's nose, General Blucher's flamboyant moustache, the one-armed Lord Nelson, the pug-faced (and mad) Tsar Paul of Russia, the portly Prince of Wales and the wiry Prime Minister, William 'Bottomless' Pitt all feature prominently. "Napoleonic Wars in Cartoons" is divided into chapters each prefaced with a concise introduction that provides an historical framework for the work of that period. Altogether more than 300 drawings from both sides of the conflicts, in colour and black-and-white, have been skilfully blended to produce a unique visual history."--Dust jacket.
