Fitzroy : the remarkable story of Darwin's captain and the invention of the weather forecast
A biography of Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865). Joining the navy at the age of 12, Fitzroy became a skilled hydrographer and was given command of the Beagle in 1828. He was famously joined on his second voyage on the Beagle by Charles Darwin. He served as a Member of Parliament for two years, was appointed as Governor of New Zealand in 1843 and on returning to Britain and active naval service in 1845, he developed his interest in meteorology. With the aim of saving lives at sea, he went on to develop the fundamental techniques of weather forecasting, designed a standard barometer and thermometer (a first weather station), invented the system of storm warnings, issued the first daily weather forecasts and became the founding director of the Meteorological Office. He died after committing suicide in 1865.

Coast Lines key ancestors : M Langlands & Sons /by Nick Robins and Colin Tucker.
Langlands' ships were an integral part of the Liverpool - Glasgow trade of the 19th century and early 20th century. The company was taken over by Coast Lines in 1919, after operating in the coastal shipping trades for 80 years. Langlands also formed a connection with the Stornoway Shipping Company. This book follows the history of Langlands and its legacy. The Appendices contain fleet lists, and a list of J & G Burns and G & J Burns steamers built for the Clyde to Mersey service between 1828 and 1922. There is also an index of ship names. Includes extensive photographs and drawings.

Evolution's captain : the tragic fate of Robert Fitzroy, the man who sailed Charles Darwin around the world
A biography of Robert Fitzroy (1805-1865). Joining the navy at the age of 12, Fitzroy became a skilled hydrographer and was given command of the Beagle in 1828. This book concentrates on the two voyages undertaken by Fitzroy on the Beagle and their impact on him, particularly in the light of his later suicide. Fitzroy returned from his first voyage to survey the southern coastlines of South America with four Feugian captives with the intention of educating them in Christian values. He returned to South America on the second voyage (1831-1836) with the three surviving Feugians, this time also accompanied by Charles Darwin. On their return to England, Fitzroy, a devout Christian, became increasingly estranged from Darwin as their views on evolutionary theory diverged. Fitzroy was also a Member of Parliament and briefly Governor of New Zealand before his assignment to the new Meteorological Office within the Marine Department of the Board of Trade. Establishing the fundamental techniques of weather observation and early coastal weather stations, his work went largely unrecognised and his daily forecasts were often ridiculed. He died after committing suicide in 1865.

The ambitions of Jane Franklin : Victorian lady adventurer /Alison Alexander.
A biography of Jane Franklin (1791?1875), born Jane Griffin. Well educated, Jane travelled in Europe as a young woman. Following her marriage to Sir John Franklin in 1828, Jane continued to travel alone and with companions around the Mediterranean. In 1836 John Franklin was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) and Jane accompanied him there travelling widely across Australia and becoming involved in life in the colony. Recalled at the end of 1843, John Franklin was then appointed to lead an expedition to find the North-West passage. Departing in 1845, Franklin disappeared and Jane then devoted herself to finding out what had happened to the expedition, sponsoring seven expeditions to find him and supporting many others. Faced with Dr John Rae's evidence of cannibalism, she used her influence to challenge the evidence and maintain her husband's reputation as a polar hero, in the process destroying Rae's reputation. She continued to travel widely until her death at the age of 84. The text is supported by photographs, a bibliography and notes.

Atlantic piracy in the early nineteenth century : the shocking story of the pirates and the survivors of the Morning Star /Sarah Craze.
"The pirate attack on the British brig Morning Star, en route from Ceylon to London, near Ascension Island in 1828 was one of the most shocking episodes of piracy in the nineteenth century. Although the captain and many members of the crew were murdered by the pirates led by the notorious Benito de Soto, some survived, escaped and sailed the ship back to Britain. This book, based on extensive original research in Britain, Spain and Brazil, retells the story of the Morning Star, provides much new detail and corrects errors present in the many contemporary accounts of the attack. It sets the attack in the wider context of piracy in the period, and discusses many issues which the episode highlights: how pirates' careers began and developed; how they were pursued and tried, often with difficulty; what became of their treasure; how stories of the attack and of the survivors were sensationalised; how the women passengers on the ship endured their ordeal at the hands of the pirates and then, back in Britain, had to endure potential loss of their reputations."--Provided by the publisher.

Edward William Cooke, 1811-1880 : a man of his time /John Munday.
A biographical study of Edward William Cooke (1811-1880), a landscape and marine artist and botanical illustrator. Largely based on Cooke's diaries and notebooks, this study also highlights Cooke's other interests including antiquities and collecting, geology, gardening and garden design. The work is supported by over 500 plates illustrating Cooke's paintings, engravings and sketches with many in colour. Much of his work depicted English coastal shipping and scenes, including Greenwich, but his work also reflects his travels in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Italy when he visited Venice at the same time as John and Effie Ruskin. Appendices include extracts from his diaries covering the period 1828-1879, a catalogue of his paintings in oils, a record of his watercolours, his travel itinerary covering the years 1824-1879 and accounts for 1849. The work is supported by a detailed bibliography and index.

Hunting the last great pirate : Benito de Soto and the rape of the Morning Star /Michael E.A. Ford.
"In 1827 the Duke of Wellington - former Commander-in-Chief of the British Army and British Prime Minister - ordered the withdrawal of British soldiers from the island of Ceylon after years of bloody conflict there. English cargo vessels, including the unarmed English Quaker ship Morning Star, were dispatched to sail to Colombo to repatriate wounded British soldiers and a cargo of sealed crates containing captured treasure. By January 1828, Morning Star was anchored at Table Bay, Cape Town, before joining an armed British convoy of East Indiamen, heading north. Heavily laden, she struggled to keep up with the ships ahead. The notorious pirate Benito de Soto was the master of a heavily armed pirate ship, lying in wait off Ascension Island in the mid-Atlantic to pick-off stragglers from passing convoys. Morning Star was easily overhauled by the pirate and stopped with cannon fire. Her captain and officers were executed and the attackers fled to Spain with cargo stolen from the stricken ship. Later de Soto buried the treasure and travelled to British-ruled Gibraltar with forged identity documents to sell the spoils. The authorities, however, discovered his identity and he was arrested. Despite the absence of eyewitness evidence that he was the pirate captain, he was convicted of piracy before a British judge and jury and hanged at Gibraltar in early 1830. It is clear that proof of de Soto's guilt in court was lacking, but astonishingly, when renovations were being carried out at de Soto's former home village in Galicia, Spain, in 1926, much of the treasures he had plundered from Morning Star were found buried in the grounds there. Almost 100 years later, British justice administered in London and Gibraltar was vindicated."--Provided by the publisher.
