Anglo-French naval rivalry
1840
-1870
"The Crimean War brought the British and French navies, the most technologically advanced in the world, into alliance after many years of common hostility. It was a period of enormous technological innovation and development, witnessing the transition from sail to screw, and the birth of the ironclad. In this extensively reseached and thorough study, C. I. Hamilton traces the technological development of both British and French navies and analyses the political and diplomatic policies which formed the backdrop to the naval history of the period 1840-1870. Dr Hamilton compares the two navies in a variety of important ways: their recruitment and training systems, dockyard facilities, naval administrations, strategy and tactics."--Provided by the publisher.

Architectural colour in British interiors 1615-
1840
"For many years, historical architectural colour has been an elusive topic, since paint fades and discolours, and most early schemes have been obliterated by succeeding phases of redecoration. In parallel with this, the taste of later generations has also overlaid earlier ideas of colour with a mass of subjective opinion and received wisdom. To remedy matters, this objective study combines information from documentary sources with data obtained from the technical investigation of significant interiors by important architects of the period, and presents for the first time a coherent outline of true historical practice. It is an essential complement to more conventional architectural studies of form and space. In a series of chapters, the noble interiors of Inigo Jones are contrasted with more intimate spaces of the period; and the succeeding drabness adopted in many rooms of the second half of the seventeenth century is set against its taste for marbling, graining, and imitation japan. It is shown how the new foundation established by the Palladians came to provide the basis for the lively use of colour by Robert Adam and his contemporaries; and the study concludes by showing how the development of colour theory in the early nineteenth century superseded eighteenth-century ideas and, combined with the Regency taste for the exotic, led to an entirely new outlook, much of which still forms present-day preconceptions."--Provided by the publisher.

American Indians in British art, 1700-
1840
/ Stephanie Pratt.
This book explores the representation of American Indians in British art 1700-1840. During the eighteenth century, the British allied themselves with Indian tribes to counter the American colonial rebellion. In response to this development, British artists produced a large volume of work focusing on American Indians, including paintings, sculptures and graphic media. Although these works contained a familiar bias, depicting their subjects as either noble or ignoble savages, they also represented American Indians as active participants in contemporary society. Placing the works in a historical context, the author shows how the roles of American Indians were depicted, how their contact with Europeans was interpreted, and how their portrayal moved from the symbolic, to that of actors on the colonial stage.
