The magnetism of Antarctica : the Ross expedition 1839-
1843
/John Knight.
"This under-documented expedition was a pivotal moment in the annals of polar exploration and was the starting point, in historical terms, of revealing the great unknown continent of Antarctica. It was the first time in nearly 70 years, since Captain James Cook had circumnavigated Antarctica, that a Royal Naval voyage of discovery had ventured so far south. They set a new 'furthest south' record in the process beating the one set up by James Weddell in a whaling ship in 1823. The expedition set sail from Greenwich in 1839. It consisted of two wooden sailing ships commanded by Captain James Clark Ross and Commander Francis Crozier. The ships were manned exclusively by Royal Naval personnel and each ship had a complement of 64 men and officers. Their primary task was of a scientific nature to study the Earth's magnetic field and build up a set of results that could provide a greater understanding of the effects of magnetism on compasses and their use in navigating the world's oceans. This voyage had a set of planned targets and all were accomplished. In the process a vast amount of scientific information was collected. Many exotic places were visited during the voyage amongst them Madeira, St. Helena, Cape Town, Kerguelen Island, New Zealand, Australia and the Falkland Islands but the pinnacle was the discovery of the Ross Sea, the Ross Ice Shelf and the mighty volcanoes of Erebus and Terror (named after the two ships). The crews experienced the dangers of navigating in ice-strewn waters and narrowly escaping being crushed by icebergs. Illness was kept at bay although several lives were lost due to accidents. It would be another 60 years before the scenes of their greatest discoveries were visited again and then the Golden Age of Discovery was ushered in with the likes of Scott, Shackleton and Amundsen."--Provided by the publisher.

Negotiating abolition : the antislavery project in the British Strait Settlements, 1786-
1843
/by Shawna
"Negotiating Abolition: The Antislavery Project in the British Straits Settlements, 1786-1843 explores how sex and gender complicated the enforcement of colonial anti-slavery policies in the region, the challenges local officials faced in identifying slave populations, and how European reclassification of slave labor to systems of indenture or 'free' labor created a new illicit trade for women and girls to the Straits Settlements of Southeast Asia. Through a history of early-19th century slavery and abolition in this often overlooked region in British imperial history, Herzog bridges a historiographical gap between colonial and modern slave systems. She discusses the dynamic intersectionality between perceptions of race, class, gender, and civilization within the Straits and how this informed behavior and policy regarding slavery, abolition, and prostitution within the settlement. This book provides an important new perspective for scholars of slavery interested in Southeast Asia, British imperialism in the Indian Ocean world and Asia, the East India Company in the Straits, and gender and sexuality in the context of empire."--Provided by the publisher.

China trade and empire : Jardine, Matheson & Co. and the origins of British rule in Hong Kong, 1827-
1843
A selection of the correspondence from the Jardine Matheson Archive written by or to William Jardine and James Matheson between the years 1827 and 1843. The letters document their business concerns around the tea and opium trades and British exports to China, as well as providing an insight into the commercial, political and economic context of the time. A detailed index of names provides access to individuals and ships connected with the business partners and their operations. The appendices include a glossary of terms, a list of East India Company Ships, their Managing Owners and Commanders 1829-1830, and a listing of the principal characters referenced in the letters.

Moss : the life and letters of a Royal Navy surgeon, Edward Lawton Moss MD, RN,
1843
-1880 /Paul C.
A biography of Edward Lawton Moss, a Royal Navy surgeon, who was born in Ireland in 1843 and went on to serve in the Caribbean, the Arctic, on Canada's Pacific coast and in the Balkans. His first posting, in 1864, to the ship HMS Bulldog, based in the West Indies, was followed by a posting to HMS Simoom in which he served for four years. A shore based appointment at Portland Sick Quarters was followed by an appointment to Esquimalt Naval Base, British Columbia. In 1875-76 he served on HMS Alert under Captain George Strong Nares as part of the British Arctic Expedition to reach the North Pole. Moss died in 1880 following the loss of his ship, HMS Atlanta, in severe weather after leaving Bermuda. The book is illustrated with colour plates of Moss's paintings and photographs. The author has based much of the text on Moss's own letters and provides contextual detail of the conditions in the Navy and the medical challenges facing a surgeon at the time. The work is supported by a bibliography and detailed notes.

of the `Gipsy' : the journal of John Wilson, surgeon on a whaling voyage to the Pacific Ocean 1839-
1843
Wilson joined the London-based whaleship Gipsy in 1839, within three months of obtaining his LSA (Licence of the Society of Apothocaries) and at a time when there was said to be an oversupply of medical practitioners. Following the voyage, Wilson qualified as MRCS (Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons) and set up in general practice in London. Wilson's journal provides details of the voyage as well as details of everyday life on board and his entries are accompanied by drawings and sketches. His descriptions include those of places visited, the people encountered, the crew and their movements, supplies and medical treatments as well as whaling itself.
