Promotion or the bottom of the river : the blue and gray naval careers of Alexander F. Warley, South Carolinian /John M. Stickney.
"South Carolinian Alexander F. Warley (1823-1895) was an exceptional naval officer who enjoyed a robust life of far-flung adventures at sea during several dramatic periods in American maritime history. Warley's career began in the 1840s, when he served as a midshipman on Old Ironsides and later took part in the Mexican War. His military exploits reached their zenith when he commanded the CSS Manassas - the first ironclad ship to engage in combat - at New Orleans in October 1861. John M. Stickney's richly detailed biography of Warley as an officer first in the United States Navy and later in the Confederate navy offers a representative example of America's professional military class during the nineteenth century. An ambitious youth of little means, Warley secured an appointment as a midshipman at the age of seventeen through the influence of John C. Calhoun. Over the next two decades of maritime adventures, Warley faced four courts-martial, combat and capture in the Mexican War, and the challenges of rising in the ranks. After South Carolina seceded in December 1860, Warley joined the newly formed Confederate navy and gained recognition for his service at New Orleans, commanding the Manassas until the Confederate defeat there in 1862. Warley's career in the Confederate navy ended with his command of the CSS Albemarle and its destruction at Plymouth, North Carolina. With vivid details and rich narration, Stickney portrays one young man's struggle for glory and success in a divided nation. Using ships logs and naval records, Stickney unravels Warley's naval career and explores the Civil War naval actions that unfolded in New Orleans, Charleston, Galveston, Savannah, and Plymouth during this critical time in American history, revealing the pluck and fortitude of a previously unknown combatant."--Provided by the publisher.

The life of William Scoresby / by R. E. Scoresby-Jackson.
A biography of William Scoresby (1789-1857), whaler, explorer, scientist and clergyman, written by his nephew. Scoresby was the son of whaler William Scoresby. On completing his schooling, he accompanied his father as chief officer on the whaler Resolution and during a voyage with him in 1806 reached the highest northern latitude attained in the eastern hemisphere - a record which stood for 21 years. Attending Edinburgh University, Scoresby studied natural philosophy and chemistry and during a voyage in 1807, he embarked on the study of meterology and the natural history of the polar regions. In 1811 he took over command of the Resolution, continuing his polar studies during his whaling voyages, and in 1822, on his last polar voyage, he surveyed and charted 400 miles of the east coast of Greenland. In 1819 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and in 1824 a Fellow of the Royal Society. An active member of the British Association for the Advancement of Science, much of Scoresby's research focused on terrestrial magnetism. On entering the church following the death of his wife, Scoresby received his Bachelor's Degree in Divinity from Cambridge in 1834. As vicar of Bradford from 1839-1846 Scoresby continued his scientific studies and interest in social conditions. Scoresby married three times and died in Torquay, Devon.

Gale force 10 : the life and legacy of Admiral Beaufort
A biography of Francis Beaufort (1774-1857). Beginning his career with the East India Company, Beaufort joined the Royal Navy in 1790 and rose through the ranks, retiring with the rank of Rear Admiral in 1846 at the age of seventy-two. In 1805, Beaufort devised the first objective measure of wind strength, now known as the Beaufort Scale, officially adopted by the Royal Navy on voyages during the 1830s. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1829, was appointed the British Admiralty Hydrographer of the Royal Navy, serving in that position for twenty-six years, and helped to found the Royal Geographical Society. He trained Robert Fitzroy, commander of the Beagle, and in response to Fitzroy's request for a "well-educated and scientific gentleman", Beaufort's enquiries led to Charles Darwin joining the Beagle for her second voyage. Beaufort promoted the publication of reliable tide tables, expanded the British Admiralty Chart Series to some 2000 charts, directed some of the major naval explorations of the time, and played a leading role in the search for the explorer Sir John Franklin. He was knighted in 1848.

An American seafarer in the age of sail : the erotic diaries of Philip C Van Buskirk 1851-1870
"Philip Van Buskirk enlisted in the U.S. Marines in 1846, when he was twelve years old. Beginning in 1851, he recorded his thoughts and experiences on board ship, providing a firsthand account of the countries he visited, the brawling nation in which he lived, and the everyday life and homoerotic exploits of the sailors and marines who sailed with him. B.R. Burg draws on these unconventional and revelatory diaries and on social, religious, and medical writings of the time to create a picture of nineteenth-century America that is rarely seen. The semi-educated son of a once prosperous family, Van Buskirk had the ability and enthusiasm to depict the mores and behavior of the ordinary folk with whom he associated, something other chroniclers of his time did not do. Burg points out that a substantial gulf separated the perceptions and sentiments of literate Americans of this period from those of unlettered Americans. Van Buskirk's journals highlight the differences between these groups and tell of the conflicts that existed as the notions of propriety and morality held by the upper classes were tested by a less-than-deferential underclass."--Provided by the publisher.
