James Fitzjames : the mystery man of the Franklin Expedition /William Battersby.
A biography of James Fitzjames, captain of HMS Erebus and third in command on Franklin's 1845 expedition to find the North West passage. The author established that Fitzjames was the illegitimate son of a diplomat, Sir James Gambier, and was brought up by the Reverend Robert Conningham. Fitzjames joined the Royal Navy in 1825, served on the Euphrates expedition from 1834-37, fought in the Egyptian-Ottoman War (1839-40) as a gunnery lieutenant and then in the First Opium War before joining the Franklin expedition on which he died in 1848. The author draws on Fitzjames's personal letters and journals as well as official naval records.

A sailor's life : the life and times of John Short of Watchet 1839-1933 /Tom Brown.
John Short ('Yankee Jack') was a merchant seaman and a recognised 'shantyman' taken on as crew because in addition to his experience as a seaman, he had the ability to lead work songs to keep the crew working at hauling or heaving efficiently. Short contributed fifty-seven shanties when interviewed by the English folk song collector Cecil Sharp in 1914, the majority deep-sea shanties. Short followed his father into the coastal trade at the age of nine in 1848 but soon moved into ocean trading routes. Short retired from the sea in 1901 and died in 1933, his death marked by an obituary in The Times. His story is told through his voyages and extracts from poems and shanties. The shanties are published in full with music in an appendix. Other appendices list and provide further details of his ships and voyages undertaken as well as a family tree.

The lost story of the Ocean Monarch : Fire, family & fidelity /Gill Hoffs
"The Ocean Monarch was only a few hours out of Liverpool on 24 August 1848 when a cabin passenger shouted "Fire!" and all hell broke loose. Bound for Boston with almost 400 people on board, the emigrant ship was soon ablaze with little chance of putting the flames out. People watched helplessly from their cottages along the Welsh coast as some ships ignored the travellers' plight while others raced to their aid. On the 170th anniversary of the disaster Gill Hoffs reveals the full story of this forgotten wreck, including tales of French royalty, an American artist, and a courageous stewardess who gave her life to save her fellow travellers. Discover what happened to the passengers and crew, including: James K. Fellows, a kindly American jeweller trying to get home to his family; Jotham Bragdon, the first mate who fled the wreck then returned to shore a hero; Mary Walter and her mysterious 'family', escaping danger in London only to find greater peril lay at sea. Follow the murder trial of a crew of rescuers and find out the real fate of their 'victim' - and whether the mysterious Irish toddler 'Kate' found her family again."--Provided by the publisher.

Gale force 10 : the life and legacy of Admiral Beaufort
A biography of Francis Beaufort (1774-1857). Beginning his career with the East India Company, Beaufort joined the Royal Navy in 1790 and rose through the ranks, retiring with the rank of Rear Admiral in 1846 at the age of seventy-two. In 1805, Beaufort devised the first objective measure of wind strength, now known as the Beaufort Scale, officially adopted by the Royal Navy on voyages during the 1830s. He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1829, was appointed the British Admiralty Hydrographer of the Royal Navy, serving in that position for twenty-six years, and helped to found the Royal Geographical Society. He trained Robert Fitzroy, commander of the Beagle, and in response to Fitzroy's request for a "well-educated and scientific gentleman", Beaufort's enquiries led to Charles Darwin joining the Beagle for her second voyage. Beaufort promoted the publication of reliable tide tables, expanded the British Admiralty Chart Series to some 2000 charts, directed some of the major naval explorations of the time, and played a leading role in the search for the explorer Sir John Franklin. He was knighted in 1848.

Knock John ship / James Dodds
"As a child in Brightlingsea I always thought that our old German piano came from the wreck on the Knock John. However it is more probable it came from the later wreck of the Hawksdale in 1899, which was said to have had 500 pianos on board. My Great Grandfather William Pannell would have purchased it at the auction of salvaged goods. He even built his house from the stone ballast from another wrecked ship. It would be interesting to know how many items from the Knock John Ship survive in Brightlingsea to this day. Some forty odd years ago my baby-sitter found a bale of military cloth hidden under her floor boards. Could this have come from the Knock John? I learnt to sail on an ex-stowboating smack the Shamrock, and while serving my apprenticeship as a shipwright I illustrated several books for Hervey Benham, a wonderful local marine writer. Hervey's book the Salvagers is were I started my search for the true identity and date of the Knock John Ship, with the idea that she was carrying pianos. Now a professional artist, I am living back in Brightlingsea with my family in a house built by my great grandfather, and first owned and lived in by the Captian of his smack the Waterlily. This book marks the return to my roots and the fascinations of my youth. I hope you will find the story of the Knock John ship as fascinating as I do."--Provided by the Publisher.

Unravelling starlight : William and Margaret Huggins and the rise of the new astronomy /Barbara J. Becker.
"Challenging traditional accounts of the origins of astrophysics, this book presents the first scholarly biography of nineteenth-century English amateur astronomer William Huggins (1824-1910). A pioneer in adapting the spectroscope to new astronomical purposes, William Huggins rose to scientific prominence in London and transformed professional astronomy to become a principal founder of the new science of astrophysics. The author re-examines his life and career, exploring unpublished notebooks, correspondence and research projects to expose the boldness of this scientific entrepreneur. While Sir William Huggins is the main focus of the book, the involvement of Lady Margaret Lindsay Huggins (1848-1915) in her husband's research is examined, where it may have been previously overlooked or obscured. Written in an engaging style, this book has broad appeal and will be valuable to scientists, students and anyone interested in the history of astronomy"--

East sails West : the voyage of the Keying, 1846-1855 /Stephen Davies.
In December 1846, the Keying, a Chinese junk purchased by British investors, set sail from Hong Kong for London. Named after the Chinese Imperial Commissioner who had signed away Hong Kong to the British, manned by a Chinese and European crew, and carrying a traveling exhibition of Chinese items, the Keying had a troubled voyage. After quarrels on the way and a diversion to New York, culminating in a legal dispute over arrears of wages for Chinese members of the crew, it finally reached London in 1848, where it went on exhibition on the River Thames until 1853. It was then auctioned off, towed to Liverpool, and finally broken up. In this account of the ship, the crew and the voyage, Stephen Davies tells a story of missed opportunities, with an erratic course, overambitious aims, and achievements born of lucky breaks -- a microcosm, in fact, of early Hong Kong and of the relations between China and the West.

Franklin's lost ship : the historic discovery of HMS Erebus /John Geiger and Alanna Mitchell ; with a foreword by the Hon. Leona Aglukkaq.
"The greatest mystery in all of exploration is the fate of the 1845-1848 British Arctic Expedition commanded by Sir John Franklin. All 129 crewmen died, and the two ships seemingly vanished without a trace. The expedition's destruction was a mass disaster spread over two years. With the vessels beset and abandoned, the crew confronted a horrific ordeal. They suffered from lead poisoning, were stricken with scurvy and, ultimately, resorted to cannibalism in their final days. The mysterious fate of the ships, HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, has captured the public's imagination for seventeen decades. Now, one of Franklin's lost ships has been found. During the summer of 2014, the Victoria Strait Expedition, the largest effort to find the ships since the 1850s, was led by Parks Canada in partnership with the Arctic Research Foundation, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, and other public and private partners. The expedition used world-leading technology in underwater exploration and succeeded in a major find the discovery of Erebus. News of the discovery made headlines around the world. In this fully illustrated account, readers will learn about the exciting expedition, challenging search and the ship's discovery. Featuring the first images of the Erebus, this stunning book weaves together a story of historical mystery and modern adventure."--Publisher's description.

Slavery in Africa and the Caribbean : a history of enslavement and identity since the 18th century /edited by Olatunji Ojo and Nadine Hunt.
"For over four hundred years, thousands of African men and women were taken from their homeland and transported across the world to be sold into slavery. The history of this startling and horrific period is perennially important, and recent scholarship has sought to uncover the experiences of the slaves themselves in order to uncover the voices of its many victims. Slavery and Africa in the Caribbean analyses the written sources which have survived, demonstrating how many Africans coped by adopting a flexible identity in order to negotiate the cultural differences in African, European and Islamic systems of slavery."--Provided by the publisher.
