Capturing Poseidon : photographic encounters with the sea
The book is a curated catalogue of images taken from the collections of the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachussetts. The book contains an introduction outlining the history of maritime photography and the background to the museum's photographic collections. The images (97 in total, dating from 1850 to the 1950s), are each presented as an individual artefact, including some explanatory text. They cover a range of subjects, including shipwrecks, shipbuilding and the launch of ships, such as the departure of the Titanic from Southampton in 1912, harbours around the world and images of ordinary life on board various ships. The book includes an index and select biographies of maritime photographers.
