Turner's modern world / David Blayney Brown, Amy Concannon, James Finch And Sam Smiles.
"Published to accompany a landmark exhibition of the art of J.M.W. Turner, this publication will highlight Turner's contemporary imagery, the most exceptional and distinctive aspect of his work throughout his career. Rather than making any claims for Turner's protomodernist credentials, it will explore what constituted modernity, and what it meant to be a modern artist, in his lifetime. Turner's career spanned revolution and the Napoleonic War, Empire, the explosion of finance capitalism, the transition from sail to steam and from manpower to mechanisation, political reform and scientific and cultural advances that transformed society and shaped the modern world. While historians have long recognised that the industrial and political revolutions of the late eighteenth century inaugurated farreaching change and modernisation, these were often ignored by artists as they did not fit into established categories of pictorial representation. This exhibition and its accompanying publication will show Turner updating the language of art and transforming his style and practice to produce revelatory, definitive interpretations of modern subjects."--Provided by the publisher.

Hunting the Essex : a journal of the voyage of HMS Phoebe 1813-1814 by Midshipman Allen Gardiner /ed. by John S. Rieske ; introduction by Andrew Lambert.
"In February 1813 the British frigate Phoebe set out on a secret mission that would involve sailing halfway around the world to attack American settlements in the Pacific Northwest. The United States, frustrated at the treatment of its shipping by the combatants in the Napoleonic Wars, had finally opened hostilities against the British in the previous June. From the American perspective the War of 1812 began with disasters in its invasion of Canada, but against all expectations the infant US Navy had scored significant victories at sea. The most strategically significant of these was the campaign by the frigate USS Essex, which had almost annihilated the lucrative British whaling trade in the south Pacific. Therefore, Phoebe was diverted to hunt down and destroy this highly successful commerce-raider. After an epic search, Phoebe tracked her prey to neutral Valparaiso where the American frigate was blockaded and,in a very bloody battle, eventually captured. The American captain, David Porter, published a self-serving account of his actions which ever since has mired the battle in controversy, so this British naval eyewitness account is an important counter-balance. It is one of the lesser-known campaigns of a war which is currently celebrating its bicentenary, but its inherent drama inspired the plot of Patrick O'Brian's novel The Far Side of the World, although in its movie adaptation Master & Commander the American frigate is transformed into a French privateer."--Provided by the publisher.

Turner & the sea / Christine Riding and Richard Johns.
"The book reveals the full extent of the artist's engagement with the sea, foregrounding important but rarely seen paintings and throwing new light on some of his iconic works, including The Wreck of a Transport Ship, The Battle of Trafalgar, and The Fighting 'Temeraire'. In an age of global naval warfare, rapid technological change, and increased travel, his ceaselessly creative response to contemporary maritime affairs helped to redefine Britain's cultural relationship with the sea. The authors examine the many ways in which Turner responded to the maritime art of the past while challenging his audience with new ways of representing the sea; whether at the Royal Academy, in his own purpose-built gallery, or as a leading figure within a highly evolved print culture. The book reveals how Turner first established his credentials as a painter of the sea against a rich tradition of marine painting, exemplified during the previous two centuries by Willem van de Velde the Younger and Claude-Joseph Vernet. It examines the artist?s competitive response to the work of his contemporaries, including John Constable, Augustus Wall Callcott, Richard Parkes Bonington, and Clarkson Stanfield, and explores the complex legacy of his seascapes through the maritime subjects of later British, European, and American artists."--Provided by the publisher.

J.M.W. Turner's Battle of Trafalgar : commemoration and controversy /Katherine Gazzard
"The Battle of Trafalgar is one of the most famous pictures in the collection of Royal Museums Greenwich. Yet the story of the artist's largest painting and only royal commision is surprisingly complex. Published to coincide with the 250th anniversary of Turner?s birth, this book explores the fascinating history of the artwork. It considers the challenges that Turner faced during the creation of the painting and charts its tumultuous journey, from the storm of criticism that greeted its unveiling to its eventual place at the centre of a national art collection."

Discovering the North-West Passage : the four-year Arctic odyssey of H.M.S. Investigator and the McClure Expedition /Glenn M. Stein.
The story of HMS Investigator and the voyage undertaken by Vice-Admiral Robert McClure (1807-1873) in 1850-1854 to search for the missing Franklin expedition which had disappeared in 1848. McClure was born in Ireland and joined the Royal Navy in 1824, obtaining his first polar experience in HMS Terror in 1836. He joined an early expedition to find the Franklin expedition in 1848 and then in 1850 accompanied HMS Enterprise, under the command of Richard Collinson, on a further search. The two ships were separated in a storm, never to meet up again. McClure continued through the Bering Strait but was eventually forced to abandon the ship after she became icebound in Mercy Bay in 1853. The crew continued overland finally meeting up with HMS Resolute and HMS Intrepid, also searching for Franklin from the opposite direction. The text is supported by a detailed bibliography, notes and appendices which include the crew list of HMS Investigator and detail the creation of the Polar Medal.
