White rajah / Nigel Barley. A biography of Sir James Brooke (1803-1868), soldier and adventurer who founded the Raj of Sarawak and ruled as its first White Rajah from 1841 until his death. Resigning his commision from the Bengal Army, he unsuccessfully attempted to trade in the Far East before assisting the Sultan of Brunei to quash an uprising. In return for Brooke's assistance the Sultan awarded him the governorship of Sarawak. Complete sovereignty of Sarawak was ceded to Brooke in 1842. Brooke later presented the Island of Labuan to the British Government and became its governor and commander-in-chief in 1848. His reign was controversial with accusations of his excessive use of force against natives, under the guise of anti-piracy operations, leading to the appointment of a Commission of Inquiry in Singapore in 1854. 2002. • BOOK • 1 copy available. 92BROOKE

Bound for Australia: the loss of the emigrant ship TAYLEUR at Lambay on the coast of Ireland. The White Star Line merchant sailing ship Tayleur was lost, just north of Dublin, on 21 January 1854. On her maiden voyage, the ship was carrying emigrants, many of whom were skilled tradesmen, to Australia driven by the gold rush at Ballarat. Of the 650 on board only 290 survived. Using many contemporary original sources, the loss of the ship has been attributed to a small crew, compass innaccuracy, a storm and being an untried ship. The wreck was forgotten until 1957 when divers from the Irish Sub Aqua Club relocated the remains. It is now a site frequently visited by scuba divers. Included as appendices are crew and passenger lists, a glossary of nautical terms, a sail plan and the points of the compass; also a Chronology of events and photographs of artefacts. 2003 • BOOK • 1 copy available. 629.123TAYLEUR
