The book concludes with his early experiences as a Sub-Lieutenant and his return on leave in late 1917.

Gallipoli : the New Zealand story
Gallipoli: The New Zealand Story is an account of the New Zealand Armed Forces in the First World War's Gallipoli campaign, from February 1915 to January 1916. In order to tell the story, the author draws heavily on sources written by New Zealand soldiers who were present during the campaign. It is the story of the men who fought and died during Gallipoli and the national remembrance throughout the years in New Zealand, as well as telling the story of the rise of New Zealand's national conciousness, forged during the fighting. Pugsley has included diary extracts, letters and photographs from Gallipoli to give the book an almost first-person, diary-like feel. However, there are still segments of narrative such as descriptions of battles like Chunuck Bair and Hill 60. The book makes extensive use of black and white photography and has a large and detailed appendix section where Pugsley lists his sources in detail.

The defence of the Dardanelles : from bombards to battleships /Michael Forrest
"On 18 March 1915 a powerful fleet of British and French warships attempted to overwhelm the shore defences of the Dardanelles to allow minesweepers to clear the straits. By bringing together many threads of information, including extracts from British intelligence sources that had previously determined that a naval attack alone would not succeed, this definitive work examines the flaws of Winston Churchill's strategy and identifies the inadequacies of pitting warships against shore fortifications."--Provided by the publisher.

Captain Charles Fryatt : Courageous Mariner of the First World War.
"At about 7 p.m. on 27 July 1916, the Germans committed one of the worst atrocities of the First World War. Captain Charles Algernon Fryatt, Master of the Great Eastern Railway ship SS Brussels, had been court-martialled, even though a civilian, for attempting to ram an attacking German submarine and being a franctireur. Having been found guilty, he was executed almost immediately by firing squad, after a show trial lasting barely two hours, during which he was afforded no proper defence. As happened following the execution of Edith Cavell in 1915, the event caused international outrage, and led to Fryatt's body being repatriated after the war and given a ceremonial funeral."--Provided by the publisher.

Lusitania and Beyond: the life of commodore William Thomas Turner
A biography of William Thomas Turner (1856-1933), Captain of the RMS Lusitania at the time of its sinking in May 1915. The authors follow Turner's early years with the merchant marine and his progression through the ranks with Cunard. From 1903 Turner was Captain of the Aleppo, Carpathia, Ivernia, Caronia, and Umbria before taking command of the Lusitania in 1908. He subsequently assumed command of the Mauretania and Aquitania and was appointed Commodore in March 1913. The authors concentrate on Turner's story rather than an account of the events surrounding the sinking of the Lusitania, seeking to present the information that Turner had available to him at the time of the disaster, and to restore his reputation, which was damaged as a result of the sinking.

Johnny : the legend and tragedy of General Sir Ian Hamilton /by John Philip Jones.
"The Gallipoli campaign was launched in April 1915 in an effort to knock Turkey out of the war. The commander, General Sir Ian Hamilton was at fault in the way he conducted his campaign. This book examines why Hamilton failed at Gallipoli and shows how, in spite of that failure and it being his last command, he became a well respected military prophet who made many several perceptive predictions about the future of warfare."--Provided by the publisher.

RMS Lusitania : a history in picture postcards /Eric Sauder.
"Lusitania was an engineering marvel, at one time the largest, fastest and most opulent vessel in the world. When she was sunk by a German submarine on 7 May 1915, with the loss of about 1,200 lives, it sent shockwaves around the world. The iconic passenger liner immediately became a weapon in the Allied propaganda war, helping to shift American public opinion against Germany and influencing the USA's eventual entry into the First World War. Her many achievements and successes were largely forgotten. This volume tells Lusitania's story from construction to the aftermath of her sinking in remarkable contemporary postcards."--Provided by the publisher.

The unseen Lusitania : the ship in rare illustrations /Eric Sauder.
"Lost to a German torpedo on 7 May 1915, Cunard's RMS Lusitania captured the world's imagination when she entered service in 1907. Not only was she was the largest ship in the world, but she was also revolutionary in design as well as being a record breaker. Lusitania is now sadly remembered for her tragic destruction, sinking in eighteen minutes with the loss of around 1,200 souls. Through never-before-seen material, historian Eric Sauder brings RMS Lusitania to life once again. Filled with vivid, unseen photographs and illustrations from Eric's extensive private collection, this absorbing read will transport the reader back 100 years to a time when opulent Ships of State were the only way to cross the Atlantic."--Provided by the publisher.
