Brittany ferries, 1973-
2007
/ Miles Cowsill.
A history of Brittany Ferries, founded in 1973 by a farming co-operative led by Alexis Gourvennec to transport produce from Brittany to the markets of South-West England. The company swiftly developed its business model to include passenger ferries and holidays. A chronology to 2007, the year of Gourvennec's death, provides a history of the fleet, details the development of the business and highlights the involvement of key personnel. A further chapter sets out design features of the ships, both structural and interior. The book also covers the history of Truckline, a British freight company established by Peter Allesbrook, Bill Cottell and Frank Allen, purchased by Brittany Ferries in 1985. Traffic information from 1973 - 2006 is provided along with a full fleet history for both Truckline and Brittany Ferries. Photographs of the line's vessels both past and present illustrate the book throughout.

West Highland steamers : a pictorial record, 1967-
2007
/West Highland Steamer Club.
"The Red Book, the twice-yearly newsletter, now the Journal of the West Highland Steamer Club, regularly contained a collection of ship photographs of both everyday and special events in the lives of the MacBrayne vessels which plied the waters of the west coast of Scotland, from charters of vessels like the pioneering 1920s turbine steamer King George V and delivery voyages through the Caledonian Canal to regular ferry voyages. These photographs would often be the work of Jim Aikman Smith or Hamish Stewart. These two gifted photographers produced many topical and beautiful images taken in locations such as Tarbet, Portree, Islay, Coll, Oban, Fort William and Glasgow, and a selection of their work is presented here, along with some images by other photographers, to show the essence of the world of Caledonian MacBrayne and to give a wonderful insight into the lives of their ship."--Provided by the publisher.

Breaking seas, broken ships : people, shipwrecks and Britain, 1854-
2007
/Ian Friel.
"Following Britain and the Ocean Road, Ian Friel expertly navigates the history of Britain and the sea from the Middle Ages to modern times. With Breaking Seas, Broken Ships, we follow the story of Britain's maritime history through some of it's most dramatic shipwrecks. From the country's imperial zenith to the very different world of the early twenty-first century we encounter an extraordinary range of people, ships and events, including? the crew and passengers of a state-of-the-art Victorian steamship who vanished in the Atlantic; the sailors of a doomed collier brig in the dying days of sail - and the wives and children they left behind; a lowly ex-naval stoker who went into showbiz with his version of a disaster caused by an admiral; a First World War merchant ship captain who fought a running battle with German U-Boats; the courage and compassion shown by British sailors who escaped their dive-bombed ships; the people who confronted the 'black tide' left by the oil tanker Torrey Canyon; how the container ship has helped to make a new world for us all - for better or worse. With people at the heart of every chapter, it explores major environmental themes alongside the traditional concerns of maritime history, such as trade, social issues and naval warfare. Their experiences tell us the story of Britain's maritime past, one that is remarkable, moving and at times horrifying. Based on brand new scholarship, it is perfect for history enthusiasts, professional historians and archaeologists alike."--Provided by the publisher.
