Naval museum : courage, benvolence, manliness & virtue.
"This book is about one of the most attractive of the many museums in Sweden, the Naval Museum in Karlskrona. Four writers have chosen to approach the museum and the collections from their own particular spheres of interest. We invite you to take part in a tour of both the history of the museum and the Swedish navy. You will meet such prominent individuals as the brilliant naval architect Fredric af Chapman and the Admiralty sculptor Johan Tornstrom, the man behind the magnificent figureheads in the museum. In addition, extracts from contemporary diaries serve to give a very personal aspect of naval history."--Provided by the publisher.

Between theory and observations : Tobias Mayer's explorations of lunar motion, 1751-1755 /Steven A. Wepster.
This investigation into the lunar theory and tables of the moon's motion of German mathematician and astronomer Tobias Mayer looks at the important application they had in the field of navigation through the determination of longitude at sea using the method of 'lunar distances'. Mayer's lunar theories are compared to those of Euler, Newton and others and his technique of adjusting his lunar tables to fit observational data is also examined. Included are lists of figures and displays and appendices on versions of lunar equations, results of a spreadsheet analysis and manuscript sources.

Seaforth world naval review 2010 / editor, Conrad Waters.
"The World Naval Review is designed to fill the need for an authoritative but affordable summary of all that has happened in the naval world in the previous twelve months. It combines the standing features of regional surveys with one-off major articles on noteworthy new ships and other important developments. Besides the latest warship projects, it also looks at wider issues of importance to navies, such as aviation and electronics, and calls on expertise from around the globe to give a balanced picture of what is going on and to interpret its significance. Intended to make interesting reading as well as providing authoritative reference, there is a strong visual emphasis, including specially commissioned drawings and the most recently released photographs and computer-generated imagery. For anyone with an interest in contemporary naval affairs, whether an enthusiast or a defence professional, this annual is set to become required reading."--Provided by the publisher.

Kindly folk and bonny boats : fishing in Scotland and the North-East from the 1950s to the present day /Gloria Wilson.
"A pictorial appreciation of the boats and fishing communities of Scotland and North-East England from the 1950s to the present. Gloria Wilson's unique collection of photographs has never been published before. With information on boat design and construction, it includes some rarely seen naval architects' line plans. From attractive Scottish wooden-hulled craft to recent steel boats, and with many shore scenes including Mallaig herring port, Peterhead harbour reconstruction, fish auctions and fishermen net and boat-building, this book offers a glimpse into a bygone age. Finally, it considers the work being done to balance fish conservation with profitable fishing, a pressing issue for the fishing industry of the twenty-first century."--Provided by the publisher.

Sailing round my oyster : a memoir /by R.K. Whitworth.
"These are the remembered experiences of a man born in Australia, who couldn't swim, but went to sea, whose background was mysterious and undoubtedly antipodean, though he admired the English way of life. Working as a steward in the heyday of the passenger liners, he went round the world several times visiting exotic places. He remembers his passengers, some admirable, some not so, some just plain odd! He remembers too his fellow mariners with fondness for the vanished camaraderie and glamour from the days when going to sea was still a great adventure."--Provided by the publisher.

Seaforth world naval review 2012 / editor, Conrad Waters.
"Since its launch in 2009 this annual has rapidly established a reputation as an authoritative but affordable summary of all that has happened in the naval world in the previous twelve months. This year's special features include an analysis of the lates UK Defence Review, in-depth studies of the navies of Australia, Chile and Pakistan, and spotlights on new warship classes: the USN's latest LHD, USS Makin Island; Sweden's stealth corvette Visby; and a range of British-built offshore patrol vessels. For anyone with an interest in contemporary naval affairs, whether an enthusiast or a defence professional, this annual has become required reading."--Back cover

National Coastwatch : the NCI story /Brian French.
"The NCI is a voluntary body with a mission to reopen, develop and maintain a visual watch from the coastguard stations abandoned by HM Coastguard after extensive reorganisation in the 1970s. Following the tragic and avoidable loss of two fishermen after a shipwreck at Bass Point in 1984, the NCI came into being and, in 1994, reopened Bass Point station. The NCI now boasts more members than the coastguard, and operates closely with HMCG and the RNLI as part of the National Rescue Services. Split into two parts, this book explains the history and development of the NCI, key figures, dates, incidents and the training and day to day work of the coastal agencies. It also shows the stations around the coast complete with maps and photographs. Newhaven is the 26th station to open, with the NCI averaging three or four new stations each year."--Back cover.
