Neither fugitive nor free : Atlantic slavery, freedom suits, and the legal culture of travel /Edlie L. Wong.
Studies lawsuits to gain freedom for slaves on the grounds of their having traveled to free territory, starting with Somerset v. Stewart (England, 1772), Commonwealth v. Aves (Massachusetts, 1836), Dred Scott v. Sanford, and cases brought questioning the legitimacy of Negro Seamen Acts in the antebellum coastal South. These lawsuits and accounts of them are compared to fugitive slave narratives to shed light on both. The differing impact of freedom obtained from such suits for men and women (women could claim that their children were free, once they were judged free) is examined.

The Lancashire Nobby / Nick Miller.
"Nick Miller brings his training in naval architecture to bear on this comprehensive history of the Lancashire Nobby. This handsome sailing trawler, built to bring a light, perishable catch home to the deadlines of a train timetable, developed with a fast, powerful, yacht-like hull, ideal for work in shallow water. The nobby worked beam trawls, set longlines, and provided a safe platform for hand-lining and stowboating, primarily trawling for shrimp to satisfy the demand for pub snacks and shrimp teas. The nobby developed at Southport and Morecambe, and spread out to Annan in the north and Aberystwyth in the south in pursuit if shrimp, flatfish, cod, mackerel, herring and whitebait. Its history is deeply bound up with social and economic changes that took place in the region, with the industrialization of northern cities and growth of the celebrated resorts on the Lancashire coast. The Lancashire Nobby provides a definitive exploration of the technical development and social context of this unique class of workboat."--From back cover.

Fisher : the admiral who reinvented the Royal Navy /David Wragg.
""Jacky" Fisher (1841-1920) was a man with a mission: to prepare the Royal Navy that he loved so much and that had been his life for war. He saw war in Europe as inevitable and, incredibly, predicted accurately the date when war would break out. An enthusiast for change, Fisher knew that the Royal Navy was fast losing its superiority against the Germans, with a massive reserve of old and hopelessly antiquated ships held ready in case of war, but aptly described by Fisher as "unable to fight or run away." Instead, he set out to impose on the Royal Navy his philosophy of the all-big-gun battleship, the "dreadnought," while also recognizing that the future of warfare at sea lay in underwater weapons and in the air."--Dust jacket.

Shipping on the Humber : the North Bank /Mike Taylor.
"Over the years, several books featuring shipping on the River Humber have been published, but few have viewed their subject from an inland waterway viewpoint. This book, together with its companion volume 'Shipping on the Humber - The South Bank', attempts to fill that gap, though sea-going traffic has not been ignored. Wooden sailing keels and sloops, characteristic of the region in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and the steel motor barges that came along later, are featured in the illustrations, together with the shipyards where many of them were built and maintained. Maps and photographs of inland waterway craft at work on the docks, havens, rivers and canals of the Humber's north bank have been selected from locations including Driffield, Beverley, Brough, Hessle, Hedon, Newport and, of course, Hull."--Provided by the publisher.

Learning at the museum frontiers : identity, race and power /Viv Golding.
"In Learning at the Museum Frontiers, Viv Golding argues that the museum has the potential to function as a frontier - a zone where learning is created, new identities are forged and new connections made between disparate groups and their own histories. She draws on a range of theoretical perspectives including Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, Foucauldian discourse on space and power, and postcolonial and Black feminist theory, as well as her own professional experience in museum education over a ten-year period, applying these ideas to a wide range of museum contexts. The book offers an important theoretical and empirical contribution to the debate on the value of museums and what they can contribute to society. The author reveals the radical potential for museums to tackle injustice and social exclusion, challenge racism, enhance knowledge and promote truth."--Provided by the publisher.

Transport and communications / edited by Kenneth Veitch.
"The movement of people, goods, services, ideas and information has dictated the nature of everyday life in Scotland since the earliest times, and has helped to determine the boundaries and character of the nation itself. This multi-author volume explores a variety of topics on the broad theme of transport and communications. The chapters are divided into five thematic sections: water transport, land transport, air transport, communications, and transport and communications in their wider contexts. The chronological and geographical coverage is wide, ranging from the birlinns of the medieval western seaboard to aviation in the Northern Isles, and a variety of approaches to the study of the subject is offered. Each chapter can stand alone, but taken together they indicate the profound influence that transport and communications have on Scottish life and society."--Provided by the publisher.

Arctic convoy PQ-8 : the story of Captain Robert Brundle and the SS Harmatris /by Michael Wadsworth.
The story of the convoy PQ-8 in 1941/2 and the costly return journey of the SS Harmatris in late 1942 is used to illustrate the wider context of the Russian convoys and the war in general. Derived from the diaries and memorabilia of Robert William Brundle, the book gives a personal view by the Master of a British vessel of the progress of a troubled convoy, of which he was appointed Commodore, and of his eight months in Murmansk and Archangel, observing the lives and straightened circumstances of the inhabitants in the interludes between the bombings, and his struggle to repair the ship, discover and distribute food among the crew, and simply to stay alive and return home safely.

Captain John Skinner and the age of the steam yacht : a biography, his life and times 1861-1928 : from miller's boy to master mariner.
Tells the story of John Skinner, son of Charles Skinner and Susanna Burden, and grandson of William Skinner. From Lytchett Minster near Poole in Dorset, the Skinners were originally agricultural labourers who later worked in the clay industry. John Skinner worked initially as a miller but by 1881 he was describing himself as a mariner. Skinner's career is traced through merchant navy records as he progressed to Mate and then Master Mariner, making the move from commercial and cargo vessels to luxury steam yachts for pleasure cruising. The owners were often titled and wealthy and included Richard Clifford Smith during the Edwardian Era and latterly Montague Grahame-White. A personal family history set against the wider context of social history and maritime industry developments.

Sir Francis Drake : the construction of a hero /Bruce Wathen.
This book explores the history of Sir Francis Drake as a cultural icon. It considers the fact that his fame has altered over the years from single-handed victor over the Spanish Armada to a hero of commerce, explorer and ruthless entrepreneur. The development of his myth is explored from West-Country folklore, Elizabethan poetry, through writers such as Charles Kingsley and James Anthony Froude as well as his depiction in twentieth century films. There is particular emphasis on the 'long' nineteenth century, during which his reputation underwent a rigorous reconstruction to present him as a hero of the empire.

Networks of empire : forced migration in the Dutch East India Company /Kerry Ward.
"Kerry Ward argues that the Dutch East India Company empire manifested itself through multiple networks that amalgamated spatially and over time into an imperial web whose sovereignty was effectively created and maintained but always partial and contingent. Networks of Empire proposes that early modern empires consisted of durable networks of trade, administration, settlement, legality, and migration whose regional circuits and territorially and institutionally based nodes of regulatory power operated not only on land and sea but discursively as well." "By closely examining the Dutch East India Company's network of forced migration, this book explains how empires are constituted through the creation, management, contestation, devolution, and reconstruction of these multiple and intersecting fields of partial sovereignty."--Jacket.

British battleships, 1939-45. Angus Konstam.
"With the outbreak of World War II, Britain's Royal Navy and her fleet of battleships would be at the forefront of her defence. Yet ten of the twelve battleships were already over twenty years old, having served in World War I, and required extensive modifications to allow them to perform a vital service throughout the six long years of conflict. This title offers a comprehensive review of the seven battleships of the Nelson and King George V classes from their initial commissioning to their peacetime modifications and wartime service. Moreover, with specially commissioned artwork and a dramatic re-telling of key battles, such as the duel between the Bismark and HMS Rodney, this book will highlight what it was like on board for the sailors who risked their lives on the high seas."--Back cover.
